I am a chink from l976 the year that they made us change our names to dragons. This was a sad time for all of us that went to school under the name of Pekin Chinks. Its not the same any more with the name Pekin Dragons............

I totally agree with you, Laurie. I'm living in Missouri, too. Does your town begin with an "S'? Seems to be a lot of ex-Pekinites around here. We may be neighbors.

Are you sure that was in 76? I remember going to the Pekin mall when I was about 12 and getting "PCHS Chinks" earrings...that would have been in the early 80's, like 82...I totally remember the whole argument about changing the name, but I was only 6 in '76 and don't think I would have been aware of that at the time...
Confused and curious!!

Hi Chinks!!! Always will consider myself a Chink.. I participated in the protest in 1980 with my parents permission... They too, were horrified that the name was going to be changed due to some insulted aliens.:) My daughter is now a Dragon and you are so right!! It's just not the way it used to be. So many things change over the years...

Sorry,
I've not heard of any. Of course, I don't really live in Buffalo, Mo, you know.

Does anyone else remember going to the dances at the Arena on Friday nights? Gosh, that was so much fun. It's where I learned to slow-dance, among other things.

Hi fellow Chinks! Out of curiousity..and my love for collecting antiques and items from when I was younger I searched on Pekin Chinks and found this (along with another site which really had a go at our "Chinks" name, and not in a good way). I will always have a nostaglic fondness for our Chinks name, and perhaps naively was unaware that it could be construed as derrogatory at all. As high schoolers we were all just proud of our name & our school. I don't know the exact date it was officially changed to Dragons, but I can say that as a member of the class of 1979, I graduated as a Pekin Chink.

Once a Chink, always a Chink! And like you, I never once thought of the name being anything except what it was - a symbol of good old Pekin High.
I still have a few Pekin Chinks booster buttons. I think maybe the Pep Club sold them.

Pekin Chinks Hooray!

I graduated in 62 and it never once entered my mind it was supposed to be degrogatory for the chinese. I was very proud of it... an in fact, I thought it was named Chinks because Pekin is supposed to be on the opposite side of Peking, China, and it was supposed to be positive.
I know the name Dragons has never had the same loyalty as we had when we where the Chinks.
Anyone remember Dr. Lee? He was such a wonderful person and was known for helping any of the kids who needed help. A great guy and one our kids today would have loved too!

Does anyone else still remember our school song - DEAR OLD PEKIN HIGH SCHOOL, WE'RE ALL THE SAME, WINNING OR LOSING, WE'RE ALL THE SAME. Guess it's old age, but I catch myself singing it sometimes. I still dream of being in school occasionally, though I detested school when I was there!
Experiences always seem sweeter in the rear view mirror.
I haven't visited Pekin in more than 20 years, so I might just be a little homesick.

Akse, you have to understand that Pekin was/is a very backwards town. Hell, most of the people I knew had never even met a black person. Coming from Chicago it was quite a cultural shock.

During the 60's, Pekin was a great place to grow up. How many who grew up in Chicago can say that? I don't feel we were "backwards", but if that means having safe streets and appreciating good neighbors, maybe we were.
How many good memories of Chicago do you have? Please don't belittle ours of our hometown.
