Should food stamps (EBT Cards) be used for junk food?

Ice cream, soda, energy drinks, candy, etc?
If so, why?

Or, should they have limits on what can be purchased?

Should people mind their own business? Especially when they're fat?

What has that got to do with my questions?

Should people be allowed to waste food stamps on junk foods, or should the allowable foods be limited?

Why should I, as a taxpayer, buy you, a non productive individual, ice cream and cookies?

I think this is a topic that has been talked about, and debated on for years. When the food stamp program was implemented (I think back in the 60's)it had great intentions. I don't think it allowed as many of the items to be purchased that are being purchased today. It seems like every decade they make provisions to this program--allowing more people to enroll, and having more freedom to buy goods (minus alcohol).

I don't think "unhealthy foods" should be allowed. EBT is meant to fill your fridge and cabinets with nutritional foods. Not sugar and fats to cause health problems. Causality at work! Personally, food stamps are a blessing to many, but it is just one of the many Government Programs that are misused, and abused. To my knowledge there's no time limit on food stamps. One can stay on it for as long as they meet the income requirements. But, nothing can make a tax paying citizen more irate then when your in the store, standing behind someone paying with and EBT card, and they have food & beer!! I like the WIC Program. It only allows you to buy healthy items.

That's right. Complain about the welfare ants in your pantry while the bankers and politicians are carting the contents of your house and bank account out your front door.

That's right. Complain about people who buy a happy meal with food stamps, while the Pentagon and their bomb builders get another injection of budgetary sugar.

So, you think it's OK to reward the non producers with ice cream and cookies, while many of the taxpayers can't afford such stuff?

I think maybe you are one of the non producers, and you don't want your free stuff taken away.

And you would be wrong.

I'm simply criticizing the people who make big deals out of small problems, while thinking big problems are small issues.

You know, life in ignorant Appalachia.

It's not a "small problem." Over 46 million people are on this program.

Why do you ASSume I approve of the large problems?

Misconception is. Abig problem here. Saying someone on foodstamps is. Anon producer is one of them. For starters you have to have some level of income to be on them. Here's why this issue is so important to me. I was on food stamps for 2 years while I was in school. I used them every week and I got a lot of people looking down their noses at me in the checkout line. But since then I've graduated and I've been working full time for 2 years now, usually I woek overtime every other week. As of right now the govt has almost made twice the money it has spent on me. The taxes it takes out of my check every 2 weeks is more than twice what it gave me in food stamps. I'm an investment for the govt that has already seen steep returns, andm god willing, will continue to do so. Had I not got food stamps I probably couldn't have finished school and I would be working a pedestrian job, and I wouldn't even be paying half the taxes I am now or even making half the money I am now. Botto line is: people on foodstamps are not usually nonproducers, and more often than not they don't stay that way. Let them buy what they want, get you should get a bit more education on the subject before you start coming up with moronic ideas like that.

I'm sorry, you are both correct. Buying healthy food for people that need a hand up is a moronic idea.

And we should ignore "small problems" as long as larger ones exist.

Im not saying that.

I want to see you attack the big problems as much as you do the small problems. 46 million people on food stamps is still far far less than the subsidies paid to for-profit corporations, blackmailing them into keeping jobs here in this country.

46 million x avg 1200/year benefit is 55 billion. The pentagon spends 700-900 billion a year, roughly 12-18 times as much. And the pentagon is just one damn department. Add in all the departments, and then add in the corporate welfare and bailouts.

Get your priorities straight, hillbilly. I wanna see your asss put as much effort into addressing the bigger abusers of the system. Lets see it, buddy. Funny, all I see you complaining about are the little guys burdening the system.

What about Union workers? They build powerplants so you can access your little computer and type these petty messages/questions. What happens to Union-Labor when they get done building your new power plant? THEY GET LAID OFF AND PUT ON THE "BOOKS" (the back of the books as well!) That means they might not see another job for 12months!?!?!? So when I get laid off, the FIRST thing I do is goto the unemployment office and then within the same hour I goto the foodstamp office. I never get declined for any of them. I work hard if not harder than anyone I know. Non-productive? Pfft!!! Every job I've been on we've got out of there atleast 5 months ahead of schedule and anywhere from $100-$30MIL under budget!!! Now take that with some salt and swallow hard you non-productive, blogging space monkey. Get your facts straight young one, and yes -- their is far bigger problems then the one addressed here. How inconsiderant of you to post something such as this without getting the details on the subject. You must be a lazy? Yep ... non-productive lazy. Why does this site allow people like you to come post on here? Better yet .. why does this site even exist? A good way to hide yourself and rant about stuff you wouldn't dare say to any union employee that bends over backwards to get there job done right, the first time! Everytime you flick on your lights or use your stove, be thankful that food stamps exist!! Without them the hard-working Union hands that build your power stations wouldn't be able to feed their families while they wait on another job.

Go lay down lazy!

There, I just finished watching the first half hour of The Orally Factor on Fox News since I fit their 'old white man' demographic, and now I am fully recharged in my hatred over petty things. Time for bed.

I can't sleep. I can't get over the fact that my outraged views over trivial little things did not jibe with the electorate this past November. I cannot believe my beloved party actually issued a report on their November failure that they actually labelled as an 'autopsy'. Really, are my concerns that dead-on-arrival with the mainstream voter? I better double down on my old strategy and change their minds right quick.

Because you seem willing to give $686 billion dollars every year to the war machine to get people legs blown off. People are getting candy. I suggest you get a life.
