Hi! We are currently living in Ohio, just east of Cleveland. We are considering a possible relocation to Kingsport and would like any info from current residents. I am going as far as comparing my monthly utilities and groceries! The school system is a priority as I have 3 adopted children with special needs and one already diagnosed as learning disabled. The opportunities for employment are of course a priority and we have already found that it seems that the housing market is very reasonably priced if not well below ours. Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just to let you know this area is awful as far as employment. You may think the real estate is a deal but you probably should research the pay in the area before you make a decision. There are a few jobs available but many times it depends on who you know in order to get that job but you never know. I don't know what type of employment you would be looking for but many college graduates leave this area once they get their degree. If you are looking for factory work, there are a few left here but many of the factories have laid off and others are planning on doing so, others have closed and moved out of the country.

Please do not move your family to Kingsport. Utilities are high compared to the wages; wages are the third lowest paying wages in the country so it very hard to live. It does not matter that food is cheaper than other areas. Employment is virtually non existent ranking 16 out of 100 with 100 being the best according to places rated. If your family has breathing problems you surely do not need to come here. The chemical, paper, concrete, and other plants send massive amounts of pollution into the air that covers the city and surrounding areas. It stinks to say the least and it is cloudy most of the time. Tennessee has cut funding for many programs and if you have to go to the hospital or nursing home you will be very sorry. They are among the worst in the nation. Also, Tennessee has the highest sales taxes in the country and we tax food at nearly 10 percent. We do have nice people and pretty low crime. So come on down if you have a pot full of money and a gas mask.

Hey scripper, do you realize just how ignorant you sound in your post? For your information I do work. Apparently you are out of touch with the people who are looking and continue to look for better jobs. No I am not on welfare and receive no assistance AT ALL. However, it sounds as if you are the one who does since you are not up on the job market information. You are very ignorant. Ohioan2, just to let you also know that many such as scripper who assume much and no nothing of what they speak is some of what you will run into around here also. However, if you can overlook the ignorance of those such as scripper then you may like it here. Take a look for yourself at the jobs and you will see what I and the other person have posted is true. If you are looking for something such as restaurant work you may find a job but if you are an experienced person in management or have a college education you will find it a bit tougher to find something. Be prepared to redo a resume because you may be considered "overqualified" for some of the jobs you do run across, even if you know people who can help you get in there.

That should have been "know" instead of "no" in my post.

Scripper, I would like to ask you, since you like to assume you know so much about the posters here, exactly what is it I do for a living? What field do I work in? Perhaps I do know a little of what I speak about. What type of employment is the original poster looking for? Since you assume to know what type of work they do, I am sure you could give them suggestions as to what companies to send resumes. I await your all-knowing answer because you are, after all, an all-seeing, all-knowing entity right?

This guy is flat wrong about utilities being high in Kingsport. We are the only city in TN on American Electric Power. The city chose them because of their great rates. I have 5 in my family and have a 2000 sq. foot house and my electric bill averages $80 a month, and my water bill averages $33. Probably among the lowest rates in the U.S.

There are plenty of retail jobs, food jobs, medical jobs, collections jobs, and chemist jobs but if you're doing anything else it is kind of hard to find one in this area. Most people commute to nearby areas.

Also, pretty much all the schools are not that great. Funding is really bad. Plus the special needs class at my school included like 4 kids and they treated them like they were in daycare, not school.

I wouldn't recommend it for you. Johnson City might be a better choice by these standards.

Just a query for you Ray, I have American Electric Power as my provider also, Just bought a house that is 1200 sq. foot and I have 4 in my family and my power bill runs $125 a month. I had a heat pump put in when I first bought the house. How do you keep your power bill so low. Your house is bigger with an extra person in your house, that I dont understand.

Sorry Ray utilities are high. You must work for the city or the power company and have the best insulation on the planet or else do not turn anything on. Don't you remember the 20 plus percent rate increases and all the people in the paper hollering about how high their bills are and they cannot pay them? Kingsport utilites are rated at 98 out of 100 with 100 being average for the US but when most people make next to nothing the utilities are way out of line. Charter is the bankrupt cable company which closed their doors in Kingsport making people lose their jobs. Charter has the highest rates and poorest service in the country according to Consumer Reports.$60 plus bucks for just the basic 70 channels. Isn't the sewer bill three to four times what the water bill is? I forget which one it is. Embarq phone trys to sell you something every time you call them and good luck if you ever have to get a bill corrected with them. And do not forget the 10% sales tax on these utilities.

If you commute count on 30 minutes to an hour. The closest city of any size besides JC is 75 miles from Kingsport and that is Asheville North Carolina. They have lots of motel maids jobs and you have to go over a tall mountain to get there. Not too good if it snows. Funding is bad because the state and local govts will not collect enough money to fund basic services. If you have money, can home school, and pollution does not bother you then give it a try.

My husband works for the power company "no go" and unfortunately my electric bill is still sky high. But I do agree with you that Ray there must have some awesome insulation for his house. Maybe we should ask him where we could get some of that.
