It's that time of year again, although to my disappointment I discovered that the Sensabaugh Tunnel (Not the drive through one, the real one) was closed off with tree branches that had "NO TRESPASSING" written on them. That really sucks, it was a fun place to go.
What else is there in Kingsport ghost wise? I know about 5 Caves, well I've heard of it but I don't know the story, nor do I know how to get there. Also, Rotherwood Mansion is famous but I don't know how to get there either. Anyone care to enlighten me?
Also the Netherland Inn Road ghost is something I've never seen, I've tried though.

5 Caves (aka Five Caves) is located about 1/4 mile west of the Walmart Supercenter on the northern side of West Stone Dr. There was longstanding argument over whether it was an old quarry or a huge sinkhole/depression with caves located at the bottom. I visited 5 Caves a couple times as a kid during the 70's and the caves appeared to be have been blasted out of the lower walls with large stone blocks located inside the entrances to the two largest caves which aligned me with the theory of it being an old quarry. This was reinforced by the fact Vulcan Materials had (and still has) a rather large quarry located about 1/4 mile to the northeast. I searched the location on Google Earth and it's still clearly visible from above by satellite but when zooming in on the photo it appears to have been partially filled in with soil & rock completely covering the bottom where the caves were located. This could've been done intentionally to close off the caves or it could just be the result of a rockslide.

Years ago, folks could either turn off Sensabaugh Hollow Rd. from the north or West Stone Dr. from the south and follow Big Elm Rd. along the west side of the river until they came to a railroad trestle. They'd park on the side of the road and climb up to the trestle to cross the river. Once they crossed over, they could follow a couple short trails with one going down into the depression where the caves were located and the other going to the cliffs at the top edge. These trails are still clearly visible when viewed with Google Earth.

According to legend, 5 Caves was haunted by the ghosts of people who had committed suicide by jumping from the cliffs. There were also varying stories of Satanic cults sacrificing people and murderers hiding their victims' bodies inside the caves. There was even a tale about Cherokee Indians throwing captured women and children from the cliffs while forcing their husbands and fathers to watch in retaliation for Cherokee warriors being killed in battle (this would of course require 5 Caves to have existed during the 19th century).

5 caves was a cool place to visit as a kid but in retrospect it was pretty dangerous (especially at night) due to the risk of falling off unprotected cliffs and being hit by falling rocks. If nothing else, it did involve trespassing upon railroad property while walking along the tracks. Crossing the trestle was probably the scariest part of anybody's visit to 5 Caves due to the risk of being caught halfway across it during the frequent passage of coal trains.

There's always been disagreement over the Sensabaugh Tunnel ghost story. Some versions say it's the one you can drive through while others claim it's the one you can't drive through.

Years ago it was considered a rite of passage for a car full of teens to stop inside the tunnel and turn off the engine & all lights for a good minute or so. For full dramatic effect, you had to also roll down all windows with everyone remaining whisper quiet in order to hear the ghost baby's crying. Many a girl (and many a guy too) had the sh!t scared out of them by someone quietly sneaking into the pitch black tunnel from behind the car and grabbing them by the arm or banging on the car itself. This was usually pre-arranged in advance with a friend who discreetly followed the group in a second car and then turned off his lights as he approached the tunnel. It was all harmless fun back then but nowadays such a prankster would likely end up getting shot.

Sensabaugh Tunnel is owned by CSX and property should not be blocked. The people who live in the house over from it are the ones who have blocked the entrance to it. They shot at a group of teenagers recently with an air gun because they don't want people over there! Ridiculous! A group of us are going to move the barricade this weekend lol

5 caves is awesome!Amazing to look at... You would have to park off the road somewhere and then walk in from off Stone Dr. Don't park near the entrance to it or police will come and escort you out.

Five caves was a quarry. There are no longer five caves there as it has been mostly (if not completely by now) filled in which was started when they built the Walmart nearby. I don't know if this was done as a convenience or for safety.

If you are going to visit Sensabaugh Tunnel, please clean up your animal sacrifices, dead bodies, beer cans and other trash as viewing the after-effects of scumbags visiting the area is not pleasant for passersby. In other words, don't be a douche and ruin it for everyone else, as this will only end up getting that officially closed and sealed off as well.

I would love to move all that crap they put there and clean the site up! This place has been a rite of passage for at least 40 years that I know of and I'd hate to see that history end because of some knuckle head neighbor :)
