I am frustrated as a teacher trying to find an outlet for my students. I have several angry boys (also girls) who are from families who simply cannot afford to pay for sports or after school activites. They are big behavioral problems because they tell me that no one really pays any attention to them at home. I can see this being true with many because sometimes parents are just so tired.....especially if they work and are single parents.

However, what happened to sports being free if a family could not afford it. I called the rec center and several other places. In fact, I emailed everyone and every facility that I could think of to ask about the cost if the parent was out of work or the family could not afford the payment. The rec did tell me that it would be 1/2 price, but still that is too much money. The parents cannot even afford gas money.

We need a YMCA or some place for these troubled kids to go by bus after school. I am sick of excuses and hearing that people really care. If you care, help these kids! At least, point me in the right direction to find them help. I am not giving up on them, but I am so disappointed in our community for not doing more to help our kids.

In fact, if you want to sponsor a child to join in on a sport....please, let me know. I have about 8 boys right now who desperately need your help and several girls. They need something positive happening in their lives. Imagine the difference you could make.

If you want to help or know how to help, please leave a post. I would rather remain anonymous, so I will talk to the parents and you can work out the details with the sports facility or the karate place or ......

Thank you!

So how would these parents get their kids to the YMCA?

I would check with some churches that have active youth programs.

Churches pass out seeds. The government gives freebees. Well, free to some.

Buy in the meantime, assure these kids that acting out their "big behavioral problems" in your class will eventually end them up in a place where they will get 24 hour attention for years. Don't let your heart overrule your brain. One more irresponsible adult is the last thing they need.Hold thier feet to the behavioral fire while, sub rosa, you try to help them

Have you considered dropping a dime to DFCS to see about having home visits and possibly either getting the parents up to speed or moving the kids to foster homes?

Gingrich was right: if we build more orphanages for actual and de facto orphans we will fill far fewer prison cells later.

The Bethesda Home for Boys in Savannah is a perfect model. Rarely does an alumnus not turn out well - often spectacularly well.

Compassionate, rational conservatism - not mush-brained Liberalism - is always the answer.

Start a running/walking club after school. There is a late bus at both middle schools and the high school.
If they are elementary age- they should be in after school care; which takes the kids outside or to the gym daily.

A bus could take them there, but a teacher may have to pick them up when the parent could not.

After school care costs money which the parents do not have, and we do have a walking and running club after school. However, it does not go through the year due to not enough available volunteers.

Yes, but parents must pay for that - and it is not cheap.

The kids hear all the time what will happen and where they could end up if they don't get their behavior problems under control. My heart does not overrule my brain; however, when a student comes to school crying and upset about mama or daddy getting locked up the night before, it is hard to punish the child for not paying attention in class. Could you pay attention with all that emotion in your head? Teaching is my life! These kids don't need people to give up on them because their parents are too busy to care about them. They need hope and encouragement.....and yes, they also need to be held accountable for making poor choices.

Yes, I have notified our counselor many, many, many times to contact DFCS, and home visits have occurred. The child, however, still remains in the home. I only hope things got better for these kids, but I am just a teacher who can only do so much. As for bringing back orphanages....I am for that! I do believe their would be far fewer occupied prison cells. Some of these kids would be so much better off in an orphanage with more stability and less neglect. If you know how to go about being heard and bringing a boys' home or an orphanage here, I would love to know what to do.

In the meantime, I still have some very needy students who would love someone to "show" they care by taking action now to make their lives better.

Actually, their is a boys home here already.

I appreciate and share your concerns. I'm glad to hear your head is in the right place as well as your heart.

It sounds like maybe what would be your best hope for immediate relief the "Big Brothers/Big Sisters" chapter in Jax and ask for guidance on how to go about starting a chapter here.

Due to the extreme ideologue rantings of some of my fellow conservatives who do not truly appreciate the severity of the problem of malpratice by DFCS, the bar for removal of victimized chidren from the home of worthless and toxic parents is set way too high.

Perhaps when we are rid of Jason Spencer, we may have a state representative you can reason with.

On the national scene, until we have conservative Republican control of the White House and both houses of Congress, there is no chance of staunching the supply of worhtless parents at it source- the Democrat's welfare state.

Thank you very much for your information. I have contacted BIg Brother, but I never got a response. I never thought of trying to start a chapter here. That is a thought! Maybe in the summer I will look into this and some other programs..

As for politics, my mama always said not to discuss it if you feel strongly one way or another because you'll only end up in an argument. Although I love a good argument, I have no energy left from teaching all day/all week, Therefore, I will get back to you in the summer for a good and healthy argument on this topic.:)

all of this great intellect and wisdom on parenting and children, coming from the youth beater Burger King manager. Poor anonymous teacher, show some intelligence and do not fall for Jay's bullshit. He is an idiot with a little education, and thinks he knows everything. We all wish he would go back to the KKK and leave us in peace, but his fat ass can not ride a horse anymore, and can't hide under a sheet while he rolls down the road, so the Klan will not even have him anymore. What a poor excuse for a human being.
