It is interesting that the base commander, Capt. Stevens, in his meeting with the candidates a week before the election stated that his safety concerns about the airport could be satisfied in 2 ways. One was to move the airport. The second was to utilize runway 13-31 as the primary runway for jet traffic. It's certainly food for thought.
I'm beginning to feel as if certain individuals would demand relocation no matter what the Navy said. How concerned is the Navy, in that it wouldn't even "support legislation" to move the airport (as per Capt. Stevens)? Of course, citizens have heard nothing about the runway 13-31 option - much as few heard anything about the original nine sites that were to be considered. It's all about Sea Island and the "undevelopable" land that was to have been "donated".
There's a huge and pivotal piece of the puzzle missing and I can only think that it must involve a considerable amount of money. What else would drive these people this way?

Maybe we will all be "enlightened" when Deloughy reveals the "Super Secret Super Duper Deal" he has with the FAA.

Something here doesn't make sense. Deb Hase and the other hard core "relocate the airport at any cost" advocates have been saying that the airport is only used by a few hobby pilots and that it doesn't have any business use. What jet traffic is there to threaten safety of the base?

Keith Post was real worried about safety too. Why then did he use a plane from the St Marys Airport to pull a banner for his campaign? It flew off and on for weeks and almost non-stop election day. Who paid for it?

FYI Keith. You did not win because of the plane. Almost 60percent did not vote for you at all.

Y'all just don't GET it yet. The airport can't be relocated to Site 1. It's a dead issue. Check the FAA laws about 100 Year Floodplains, the USACE laws about 404 permits and mitigation, the EPA's reports, the Dept. of the Interior documents, the FAA's statement, the massive stack of documents from every imaginable agency. Why this is even being discussed is one of the greatest mysteries in St. Marys' history. It ain't gonna happen.(And why on earth anyone thought that is would is beyond me). This is like the scene from Monty Python's "Search for the Holy Grail" where the knight leaps around daring his opponent...even though he's been dismembered.

I wonder what Deloughy will do if his Super Duper Deal doesn't pan out. Will he resign because, until the last 2 days, his whole campaign was based on this Super Duper Deal that was going to make it possible to relocate the airport at no cost? Can he continue for 4 years to make vague references to the Super Duper Deal that is sure to happened almost any minute? Will he shapeshift like he did on latter and beautification and suddenly become an avid supporter of the present airport? Only the inevitability of time will tell.

First DeLoughy said that the airport was the #1 issue (and accused a local group who was against it of trying to affect the election), then he said that litter was the #1 issue and used the same group to try to get votes, then he flopped back into the #1 airport thing again, then he said that he was thiiiiis close to a "deal" with the FAA, then he said...whatever...I'm losing track. The man's giving me a bad case of motion sickness.

it doesn't make much difference, he is the mayor elect. get used to it. the camden watch dogs didn't think about "unintended consequences" when they floated a slate of candidates. it is clear that their organization was put together for that purpose and that purpose only. they didn't study history. mayor jerry brandon and his councilman were swept out of office only when it was a one on one race.

I just wonder if they have ordered a chair for deloughy's wife to sit in his office all day. He won't be able to function without her and the other shriveled up osprey women to direct his schedule .

Sandy,
I agree but, please, lets keep this discussion on the subject of the airport.

Sandy and Friend of the City, so many have tried so hard to share documented information on this thread. Can we please not reduce it to the usual Topix toxic-stew of insults and non-sequiters?

Whether you voted for any of the "winning" candidates or not (or whether you ran and did not succeed), the airport relocation issue transcends petty politics or popularity (and certainly comments about anyone's spouse): it deals with the future of St. Marys, the honesty of those we've entrusted to represent us, our city's reputation, what has been called "a potential environmental disaster" by former US Senator Sam Nunn and many others, our promising tourism potential and plain old ethics.

Due to a huge number of prohibitive factors, a necessary USACE 404 build permit will not be issued. If the City dares to disturb the land without that permit all manner of national, state, regional, local and legal hell will break loose. In terms of importance, that trumps personal political likes or dislikes. Now, back to the topic at hand, please.

Get use to Deloughy. He only got 37% of the vote but his butt got elected any way. every one was asleep at the wheel when the Charter was changed to prohibit a run off. We have a loser who won. Just remember he is smarter than all the rest of us and we have that from a the souce closes to him. Deloughy. He has a very high regard for himself and his smarts. If it had been a two man race his butt would be at club house behind the gate sipping gin with the other residents behind the gate in the part of Camden County that is not what Camden county is about. What a damn mess we have with the likes of Deloughy and "tip toeing thur the tulips Post." Of course we have Hase in a Daze and go along Trader. It doesn't get much worst.

Marion and Old Timer, please see above comment. Perhaps you could start a "post-election" thread and keep this one clear for airport information?

Re: Blackbird's observation on the "Riverine" thread - hopefully we are all beginning to to see the empty lies that surround the airport issue and the Navy's so-called "concerns".

Mere hours (48 or so) before the election Hase sent out an "Urgent Message". Speaking of the Riverine Squadrons she said " However, what most of you don't know is that this decision, along with other decisions of the military can be influenced by the upcoming election in St. Marys." She then prattled on about the need for airport relocation.

Now, just days after the election (wherein an overwhelming pro-relocation crew was, in a minority vote, foisted upon us) the Navy announces that it can't afford to move the Riverine forces here. According to Ms.Hase "logic", we lost this opportunity because of the people who were elected. Please explain, Deb.
