Missy's Kitchen is just down the road in Yulee. I live just behind the Brant Creek Apartments in the Victoria Plantation subdivision. From my front door to Missy's is a pleasant 16 mile drive out St.Marys Rd t I-95, then I-95 S to U.S. Hwy 17 S., then south to A1A.
When you get to the intersection of Hwy 17 and A1A, where you would turn left to go to Fernandina Beach, Missy's is on your right on the other side of A1A, just behind the Texaco station on the corner. Yes, that's right: it's in the old Jinright's Seafood location.
Yes, the owner is the very same Missy we've all watched do every job there was to do at Aunt B's for years. You will also recognize some more familiar faces from Aunt B's down there.
Make sno economic sense to drive down there for good southern cooking, buffet style, you say? Hold on there, MPG breath.
They are open 7 days per week from 8:00 to 3:00 serving breakfast and lunch.
Get a load of this. Breakfast is $6.50 AND it is an AYCE buffet with eggs cooked to order if you like. The AYCE lunch buffet is $8.50 -$7.50 for seniors.
I had Sunday dinner there today and my total bill
after taxes, was a mere $8.03 (senior.)Now, I drove 32 miles round trip running a big V-8 in my van. I'm guessing $5.75 for gas. If you have a fuel efficient car or live closer, so much the better.
Was it worth the trip? You betcha!
The turkey, dressing, and gravy were all delicious. Good fried chicken. Done but juicy. Good diced and fried sweet potatoes. I had been "Jonesing" for those delicious rutabagas. I think I now know who used to cook them at Aunt B's - back when they had them. The stewed tomatoes had the best flavor of any I've ever eaten. Not quite sure what they put in them, but man, they were exceptional. Good strong iced tea. Killer bread pudding.
I skipped the salad bar but it looked good.
The place was clean and the service was prompt, attentive, and genuinely friendly. Missy is a great hostess.
Missy tells me they will probably be opening on Friday and Saturday nights in the not too distant future.
Next time you are headed to Jax to shop, go by way of Hwy 17 to AIA, eat at Missy's, then you can either return to I-95 or go on down 17 and come into the River City Mall the back way via Duval Rd.
Try it, I guarantee the food, service, hospitality, and prices will all put a smile on your face.
Oh my, here we go again.

Cracker Barrel fish fry (cod) is always outstanding.
A properly managed Denny's is second to none for breakfast.
Driving to Yulee for the sole purpose of devouring low budget all you can eat chow is insane.
Yeah, insane indeed, but he know how many time to visit de trough to overcome de cost for de trip. He don eat all dem assemly line slop chutes on dis side de border out of bidness, now he don move in on Fl. I guarontee!!!

Yes, but as your food editor, I bear the expense willingly.

Actualy, for folks who live in Camden and work in Jax, Fernandina, or Amelia Island, if she would move her breakfast time from 8:00 to 7:30, that would be a good place to catch a quick, buffet breakfast on the way to work. Ditto for Camden folks working the graveyard shift in Jax catching breakfast on te way home.

I know Sarah and I will stop there on our semi-annual Sam's trips and I will stop by when I need to go to River City to shop.

If it is on the way and delicious at an uneatable price, NOT stopping by would be really INSANE.

As to the Cracker Barrel cod, I wish they would give you the option of adding 2 more pieces of cod for an extra charge for those times when you really have the fish hungries. You get about 4 nice, plump "fingers" now.

Have you tried their fried haddock dinner? Big honking filet of fried haddock hangs off either side. Delicious and filling.

I took my wife and Aunt to try out Missy's today for lunch. The first thing I noticed as I enterned in my wheelchair was a greeting from the staff. Nice touch. Being on a strict diet of no starch and no sweets my choices in a ayce is very limited. I was told that baked chiken was available. I was bought out 3 hugh thighs. I haven't seen thighs that big since my honeymoon. They were delicous. Salad bar was small but the lettuce was fresh and crisp. Our server was sweet and our diet sodas never ran dry.My wife said the fried chi.cken was absolutly the best. Believe me if the Colonel was still alive he would of had tears in his eyes. The ladies finished with red velvet cake I enjoyed my lunch and plan to return, Good job Ladies,

I had another bit of business to take care of in Jax this afternoon.

Naturally, I set the appointment so that I could stop by Missy's Kitchen en route for lunch.

Missy's just keeps getting better and better.

The fried chicken was perfectly battered, seasoned and fried. It was so light colored when done and crispy that it was obviously fried in fresh, clean, high-quality oil.

The stewed tomatoes over perfectly prepared rice was the best I've had in years. Maybe even 20 years.

The stewed cabbage was perfect in cut, texture. and flavor.

The fried okra was lightly breaded and fried until crispy but not overdone. Absolutely perfect and truly delicious.

Good strong tea.

There were other meats and veggies I did not try plus salad and dessert bars.

There was a very pleasant ambiance. All of the customers were obviously very well satisfied with the food and service. There was a lot of friendly banter between the staff and customers.

I was struck by how all of the food on the steam table was at the right temperature (i.e, you have to let it cool a little before you eat it) but none of it was broken down. Her secret is small batches cooked repeatedly over the course of the day.

DO NOT go to Jax and not swing by Missy's.

Total price, with tax:$8.03

That was the senior rate. I think the regular price is about $1.00 more.

Yep, and Missy is all over the place. She is constantly checking on everything in the back and the front and never fails to stop by every customer's table.

A proud, present, and hands-on owner with pride of product and genuine appreciation of the customers' preferences and business is the secret to any really good restaurant. Missy has all that in spades.

You seem to have learned a lot about food considering that your experience is limited to burgers and fries with an occasional fish sandwich and some chicken nuggets.

You have to hand it to the Florida side once you get away from the people that run St. Marys business is better. You would think that the people that vote in a block from Osprey Cove would see that their type of running the local government just don't work.

Missy was smart she left St. Marys to do her business.

Have you been to Missy's on Friday or Saturday night yet?

I saw where she is now open Friday's and Saturday's from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and offering sea food as well.

That's in addition to breakfast and lunch on those days.
