Funny how a city council member tells the media and citizens one thing, but continues to do another. Last week council member told the media about this task force to save money within the police dept. Example swat service and drug enforcement. Well the srt team with the smpd is voluntary and they have no one assigned to drug enforcement. Now the same council member is trying to contract the police dept out to the Sheriffs office like Woodbine. How can anyone tell Chanel 4 and the tribune one thing but do the opposite behind close doors with a local business man who owns an alarm company, wonder when he is throwing his name in the hat to run for office. Does anyone know if the mayor is runninh again? If he is planning on running and winning, I hope he puts a stop to this so called two man task force trying to contract out our police department. It may save a few dollars but our services will diminish. You broke the city with your mismanagement, dont take it out on our crimefighters.

Dont you know thats how it works in Camden. I knew it was a lie, those meetings are taking place daily without public knowledge. I hope the citizens of Stmarys get to the bottom of this before its too late.

Is our new Sheriff in talks with Saintmarys leaders and does he want to take over SMPD?

Why not wait until we see if the new sheriff can manage his department efficiently before considering consolidation. If the city of St. Marys really wants to save money in law enforcement, there are things they can do. Instead of trying to investigate fatal traffic accidents, they could easily call the Georgia State Patrol, which will handle the investigation at no charge to the department. These investigations are time consuming and keep officers from their other duties. The same goes for a murder investigation. Instead of calling the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, SMPD often tries to crack the case itself. The GBI, if asked, will assist or take over murder investigations on the state's dime instead of local tax dollars. But they won't help if they aren't asked. I'm not sure how much the city spends to handle these investigations, but any money we can save will help the department and taxpayers.
