Over the past week, I was fortunate enough to be able to have several conversations with several old friends and make some new ones while playing several rounds of golf and watching some baseball. Some of the friends I haven't seen in over 30 years, it was great to catch up and learn about their lives, family, work career, etc.

Many of them are in (or were in) "union positions" (cops, EMTs, firemen, auto workers, no teachers, though). Each person I asked was not happy about being "forced" to join their union, either because it was a requirement to work there or by intimidation by others. Most of them said they wouldn't join the union if they didn't "have to". Some of the stuff I was told doesn't need "repeating", we've heard the stories before (one of my friends is the former Chief of Police of a pretty large city, he has me shaking my head at some of the stories he told)...

All that being said, not one of them, when asked, said they would give up the higher pay and benefits they had (and leave the union) vs. their "brothers in arms" in neighboring cities/counties that were not unionized if it meant people at the same level could remain in the union and keep the higher pay...

One more before signing off.

$817,000 and growing, donated thru MercuryOne. See, people need people. It's so much more meaningful when people take care of their own. Brother helping brother.
Government isn't the way to do this. Look what we fantastic Americans are doing. We freaking rock.

And what is wrong with my name? Get used to it.
No science can fully date the exact age of this Earth. Are you claiming to know?
And why don't you mind your own business? What difference do our differences make? How do I or anyone here affect your life?
Too funny. I didn't know you existed until you stuck you nose into my business there sport. You a trip. You soooo serious here on this back water blog too funny x2. Science has estimated the earth to be about 4.5 billion years old. Now that's a far cry from 6 to 10 thousand. So not being able to say exactly leaves room for it to be 6,000 yrs........ goodgodamighty

I don't mind your moniker sport, as a matter of fact it helps identify the insanity that you represent.....you have yourself a blessed life there sport.

Yea, that's impressive.
Are they still paying those hookers to lie about about having sex with democrats.
Oh wait ... They're still paying damages to ACORN for printing those lies about them.
Yea... very impressive.
There's a marina nearby that publishes an online newsletter - I'll cut and paste the URL so you can have a more impressive and credible source.
Breitbart is just as respectible as ANY site any of your left wing loonies post. You just can't stand to get handed to you better than you give. I'm sure it would be VERY EASY for you verify the claim. Go for it.

I don't need to insult you, the idiocy of your statement(s) does it all by itself. The biggest problem for unions is the increase in right to work states which allow workers to finally say "hell, no - I don't want to be forced to join that d__n corrupt union."
No. Right Wing Wacko legislatures, bought and sold by corporate money, do their masters bidding, like the good little prostitutes they are.

What a surprise. Politicians screw the working man to further increase profits and get even more bribes ... er.. contributions.

Who would want Middle Class wages when you can work for peanuts ?

Who would want pensions paid for by employers when they can have 401Ks they can't fund themselves ?

Who needs a 40 hour work week ?

Who needs paid vacations ?

Who needs job security ?

As a matter if fact, who needs employees when you can "lease" them and dump them in a New York minute without benefits, severance, or even kiss.

And if leasing human beings is too much trouble, just hire twice as many on a part time basis , and nobody ever accrues any benefits or decent wages.

Not much, but it's money. A fun bet.

I cant understand how someone like Carney can take all the crap Obama lays on him. He's either very ignorant or has no moral compass at all, no conscience or ethics either.

Looks like he has sold his soul to protect a socialists who wants to ruin this country.

Union membership is dropping because Right Wing Wackos support any law that destroys unions.
RWWS are destroying the only mechanism that ever allowed the Middle Class to prosper, then wondering why the Middle Class is being destroyed.
Like children who shoot their parents then bitch their orphans - destroying unions is the stupidest thing any working class person can do.
Don't worry about me.
I got my nice lifelong pension, lifelong medical care, lifelong COLA, and when I die my much younger wife will continue to collect until she dies.
So I'm all set.
It's your kids you ought to be ashamed to confront when they ask you what happened to decent wages, job security and pension plans.
Explain to your son that he just needs to walk over to G.E., or Apple, or Hewlett Packard and demand a raise or by God, he's walking away from that assembly line.
Explain to him when they laugh at him and tell him not tort the door hit him in the butt on his way out, it's his fault he's not man enough to take on a 500 Billion Dollar, or Trillion Dollar company all by his lonesome.
What a wuss he must be.
Explain to them why he works like dogs, for less money each year,(being among the most productive workers on Earth), and that while the company's profits explode, and they don't get to see a dime of the highest profits in modern history.
Explain to them that you destroyed the only method in history proven to create a sustainable Middle Class.
Explain to them that it really a good idea that the CEO who used to make 30 times your son's wage as an employee, it's really great the CEO now makes 320 times your son's wage.
Explain to them how losing a lifelong pension plan paid for by the company is a good thing, especially since the company is making higher profits than ever before and could easily afford to provide him a pension.
Maybe they'll forgive you.
I wouldn't if I was them.
I'd ask "Dad, were you really that dumb, or did you hate your own children that much ?"
Good luck explaining.
By the way - don't bother insulting me - all statements made are undisputed substantiated facts, and you'll just look silly pretending they aren't.
Yep! GONE are the days when union thugs could just "drag up" if they got their panties in a wad at their employer. GONE are the days when picket lines were threatening and to be feared. Unions have pretty much run their course. There was a time when they were needed. It's over. Unions' thug mentality and tactics is helping spell their demise. Employers got tired of being held hostage.

Argue all you want - it doesn't change the truth. That's where the money went. Cleaning up after the last Republican administration.
Brainwashed Obamabot. With left wing loonies like you in his pocket, he can spend all he wants. Do you understand how silly you sound constantly giving him passes?

Let me ask you two legitimate questions.

1.Do you approve of what the IRS has done?
2.Do you approve of the personal and private records of AP reporters being taken?

Those aren't essay questions. AND I am NOT saying that Obama had anything to do with either.

That's a good question and the answer has changed since I retired.
We used to believe that raising children was a parents' most important job,(I still do), and so our pension was designed to allow the employees spouse to stay home with the kids, and not have to worry about being penniless if the employee spouse died first.
One of the elections under ERISA that can be elected when the employee retires is taking a smaller monthly payment, but that smaller payment continues after the employee dies, if his/her spouse is still alive.
Under ERISA, the spouse has to consent to the payment option elected so it's not surprising most elect the smaller monthly payment.
So it doesn't cost the pension any more money because we voluntarily accept a lowered pension over a potentially longer period.
As spouses frequently die prior to the employee, the pension plan breaks even.

ERISA = A very good program to allow spouses to share in their pension. It's an automatic 50% unless the non-working spouse signs off on a lower %. Anything 50% and above needs no spouse signoff, unless the law has changed since I was last informed.

The best pensions will revert back to their normal amount if the non-working spouse dies before the pensioner.

Only in RWW World do they deny evolution but promote Monsantos Genetically Modified Food.

Only in RWW World do they deny the earth is older than 6,000 years old but promote oil formed in the Carboniferous Period 360,000,000 years ago.

Only in RWW World do they vote against disaster relief, but can't suck down those funds fast enough when THEIR state needs them.

Only in RWW World do they seat a person on the House Science Committee who doesn't believe in science. At all.

This is true. Every bit of it. It's amazing they never question the logic of their commitments to their lost cause.

If Unions have run their course, then so has America's Middle Class.

The destruction of unions has worked out so well for the working man, hasn't it.
