The Bessemer City beavers have backed off.
You'll recall that in August they were hard at work building dams of limbs, sticks and mud on a creek that feeds into the town's main water source.
As soon as city crews demolished the dams, the beavers rebuilt. In the middle of a severe drought when every drop of water counted, this was a serious issue.
Officials checked with the N.C. Wildlife Resource Commission about the problem and decided the beavers had to go. But a plan to trap the beavers drew protests from animal rights activists from New York to Michigan. Read more
