I actually agree with Fox. It is Val's job to make sure these deadlines are met. If Council is dragging their feet, then their feet need to held to the fire. Did Council realize that permits would be halted if action wasn't taken? If they did, then they should all be held responsible.

Generally speaking I have a tendency to give our neighbors that sit on the Town Council the benefit of the doubt when it comes to policy. However, on this issue, those folks should be ashamed of themselves by this complete abdication of responsibility. It was council, led by our former budget guru and now current Mayor, Mr. Ham that raised the amendment to the budget to divert funds earmarked for this project to “level the school funding”. Questions to the wisdom of this course of action fell on deft ears. Well Mr. Mayor, it was your motion, you own it. What is your plan?

Now I heard the Mayor is talking about a .14 tax increase in order to fund the Schools short fall. As it stands looking at 14 day furlough starting in June and I guess have to start taxing my 3 kids so I can break even. Since oldest is 12 guess getting a job is out of the question. Must be the reason you haven't heard anything about the Town Budget and only have 2 months to go.

How can Hamm be Mayor when his own business does not run properly. An employee of his has told true tales of Mr. Hamm. He serves him self beer while drunk and pays all his staff in cash. I wonder how much tax he pays to the town. I don't think he can be trusted!

WOW....Oh well, everything else is allowed, no worries about the State coming down on anyone.....Yanno, I like him, personally but he is no budget guru. Maybe in a private sector. Not in a municipal government...

A suggestion to increase the tax rate to support our independent school system should not come as a surprise to anybody. With the reductions in Federal and State resources and years of deferred decisions have combined to force a discussion on a number of policy changes needed for us to find a way forward.

Our insistence of jealousy hoarding town owned property while demanding top dollar is producing a short fall in revenue. Offering the property on the boardwalk and elsewhere for a minimum amount along with a clause that the purchaser build within one year or face a penalty of twice the value of the property or if the property is transferred within five years the town would recapture a percentage of the profits generated by the transfer could help to increase our tax base. Failure to start to think outside of the box will only exacerbate our funding problems.

Because of the decisions of the past, we now have to choose between supporting our schools, which has a rich tradition of over a hundred years. Coupled with the fact that the schools in Colonial Beach are rated higher than that of Westmoreland County, especially when it comes to Chemistry (one of the best in the state). Or turn our backs on the children of Colonial Beach and ship them off to an inferior system.

Kind of agree with "Bad Penny" ever since the rejection of Hoback's offer by Crandell and Higgs the most valued property marketing has failed. Now also has the Mobile Home Park property. As a last resort it's raise taxes because that is the easy way for council, no work just vote yes and tell all how you regret doing it. They are to busy trying to do the small "feel good" work they have lost any foresight. While I like Hamm, not sure he could lead a drunk across the street for a free Beer. Maybe they should make it a priority by borrowing the money and a commitment of repayment by marketing for increased revenue.

I agree with "yea right" about the schools... but unfortunately, it seems as if the wheels are really turning at this point. I was suprised to read that Gary was introducing the idea of looking into the cost savings of consolidation via our auditors... I can only hope he is doing this to prove the point that maybe there won't be any cost savings, given the fact that he has been a long time independent school supporter. Times change, I understand that, so for me it is heartbreaking to think of a day when the school is no longer there.(And believe me, it won't be there. There is no way Westmoreland can operate 2 separate high schools) As mentioned in the lates Journal, it would give us only 1 voice on the Westmoreland School Board, as Larry is currently as supe. Hard to get things done when it is 4 against 1.
Like I said, I will always be a Drifter, but it seems that if "times are a changin'"... Saddens me as I have fond memories of the folks who worked so hard to keep and maintain our school over the years... Dr. Warner, bless his soul may be spinning.

It would appear we are on the way to finding a solution to our problem with the State environmental requirement. Resolution #24-13, if approved by Council will transfer authority to the County to administer this program. Coupling this resolution with 25-13,which I believe will reduce cost, active discussions between Town Council members to consider merging the police and our independent school district with the county and one has to ask. What is next?

When there were trailers at the park there was rent money coming in. Now raising taxes to make up for short falls. There must've been 50 trailers there at one time. Now there is zero dollars coming in and no one to buy that land.

JUST DUMB !

Their are many people/companies interested in the land! The town should sell their land holdings at fair market value and let free enterprise run its course! Its not fair to give land away. You will never sell your land if you ask too much for it. Furthermore, it will be very tough to sell if you put restrictions on the buyers. Someone said they should have to build in a year. Lol. The town cant even issue simple building permits, which is where I do believe this thread started!
