"The Kindred Light"

When I was a college student in the early 70's in Fargo, there were many people talking about an unusual light near Kindred. Supposedly, it was a bright light that appeared frequently, had no obvious source, moved rapidly at times and changed color. The light was discussed at length, by the students that I knew and we often went out looking for it. We actually thought we saw it one night!

I remember hearing that the Government Guys from Project Blue Book had done a small investigation of this light and had concluded that it was "swamp gas." I'd like to know more about this. Was the light "real" or just a story perpetuated by a bunch of college kids? If it was "real" then is it still being seen?

That might have been Fox Fire, which is swamp gas.

yeah there are some gases in the right conditions that kinda look like its dancing out in the fields but gas doesn't chase after your vehicle chase after you get right on top of your car and enter your car light everything in your car! not sure what the spook light is but I had a run n with it with my parents about 20 years ago when we where going to see my grandpa and grandma who owned the grocery store in Wyndmere its definetly not gas

I don't know what prompted me to Google this topic after so many years but I did see the light one summer night around 1970 with 2 friends and it was not swamp gas. It came down from the distant trees and then crossed back and forth across the road ahead and changed from a dull white to green and when we took a u turn in fear it followed 50 yards behing the car until we reached a home on the left side of the road. After passing the home the road desended a hill; we looked back and the light was stationary and hovering at the top of the hill, so it had definitely followed us.

I was a college student at NDSU in the 1980's. The story I heard was that three teenage boys were out hunting at dusk and saw these strange lights. One boy went back to his house to call the sheriff while the other two boys stayed behind and watched the lights. When the sheriff arrived he found one boy wandering around in an incoherent state and the other boy was never found. I don't know if it's true. It sounds like a campfire legend to me but the person who told me about it believed it to be real.

I saw the Kindred Light. My buddy Jim and I were hitchhiking from St. Paul to Washington State in the early 70s. We were picked up by two wonderful women in Fargo who asked whether we wanted to see the Kindred Light. They drove us off to this farm country road at twilight and saw the light manifest right above the road. Given that there were no swamps (it was entirely dry and dusty), I very much doubt that it was swamp gas. It moved in a fast and erratic manner that would have been impossible for a human being. Glad I saw this site and others' descriptions - now I can rule out momentary psychosis or flashbacks (a common 70s occurence, apparently).

I grew up in Wyndmere and after play practice one evening during high school, my friends and I piled into my dad's new pickup and we went to find it. It occurred north of where my patents grew up between Walcott and Kindred. We definitely found it! It chased the pickup and stopped the engine. Our teachers in school talked about it all the time and told us that it was swamp gas. We knew we were supposed to shut off the engine and once it cooled, the spook light would go away and the engine would restart. Sure enough it worked. We were never actually afraid, just excited that we had seen it! Needless to say, I got in trouble when I got home because I was late getting home and there were a few extra miles on the pickup. But it was cool and very worth the scolding to see it in person.
