Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and Bakersville Pioneer Village
A phenomenal selection of heirloom seeds plus an old-time pioneer village await families and gardeners at Baker Creek.
Think of Jere Gettle as a modern day Johnny Appleseed, only instead of just apples, he's propagating more than 1,300 varieties of heirloom fruits and vegetables from around the world. On their family farmstead tucked back (waaay back) in the Ozark hills of southwest Missouri, he and wife Emilee own and operate the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co.,
which specializes in selling open-pollinated seeds dating back more than 50 years. None have been genetically modified. Not only do the Gettles grow many heirloom seeds on their farm but they also have a huge Seed Store where customers can browse through floor-to-ceiling bins containing packets of heirloom seeds obtained from around the world.
Most packets cost between $2 and $3, and the selection includes wildflowers and herbs. The Seed Store is the centerpiece of Bakersville, a slightly shabby collection of buildings that re-create a pioneer village and provide a perfect setting for events like Heritage Days Festivals held on the first Sunday of the month from March to November.
The annual Spring Planting Festival is a two-day celebration of organic and heirloom gardening that features vendors selling historical plants, local cheeses and more, as well as nonstop bluegrass, folk and country music performed on the open-air stage of the Bakersville Opry. The Bakery offers breads baked in an outdoor oven; the Mercantile has museumlike displays of vintage seed catalogs and gardening memorabilia; and the Apothecary sells herbs grown on the farm.
You can have lunch in the restaurant at Bakerville's Ozark Hotel. The restaurant (which has a slight Asian influence, interestingly) serves nothing but vegan dishes, and its menu changes daily. On the day we visited, we especially enjoyed the light, gingery dressing on our salad. The food is tasty, the portions are ample, and the price is always right -- whatever customers care to donate.
