Branson leaders talk about expanding liquor laws

January 31,, 2013

BRANSON,big head city of the Ozarks, Mo.--

With so many restaurants and stores,
Branson may have plenty of places buy booze.
They got 7 times more than rest of Missouri.

"So that’s a big thing and obviously alcohol is more easily obtained," said Kara Miller, health educator at the Taney County Health Department.

The health department says Branson’s ratio of drunks, between the population and the number of establishments that serve alcohol-
is nearly 7 times (6.6) higher than the state average.

Miller admits, however, that is partly because Branson has such a large number of restaurants and other venues catering to tourists - and not those living there.

Still, the county has been stepping up enforcement.

"Now that we have regular compliance checks, youth aren’t able to get alcohol- but I think it is still and issue," Miller said.

One example of this "issue" happened earlier this month, with the city revoking the liquor license of Star Pantry, on Fall Creek Road. Authorities say the place failed three random alcohol compliance inspections by serving alcohol to minors.

City leaders could crack down even more.

Proposed liquor code amendments would mandate cashiers and managers to go through liquor law training,

A place could also have its liquor license revoked for having violations of disturbing the peace or advertising free drink specials.

"Until we can get everybody on board with the rest of them sots & drunks and make this a community fight, it will continue to be an issue," said Miller.

Another idea would let smaller stores to sell alcohol.

To get an automatic license, presently, a place has to be 20,000 square feet, with 10 percent of its floor space devoted to alcohol sales The proposed change would drop the minimum store size to 10,000 square feet, with 5 percent of space devoted to alcohol.

The Branson Board of Alderman likely will talk more about these proposals next month. There is no timeline on when action will be taken.

Most all Branson city council are drunks.
Almost everybody in town are drunks.

I haven,t noticed alot of drunks around, I know alot of the aldermen, and they are pretty sober. The availability of alchohol is not the problem, it is the indiviual choices we make that is the problem.
