Yes so true' and nobody seems to give a hoot. The people that's
doing the strip mining and tembering most of which don't live in McDowell County and the owners are from out of stete, they employee a few people from the area and rap the land giving little or nothing back/ Law makers in Charleston or the big winners taking payoffs frome Timbering and Mining Lobbyist giving them permites to destroy mcDowell County.

I think that you all need to get a clue.. Timbering is doing more damage than what strip mining is.. If it weren't for mining WV would be a deserted place let along the nation would be in worse shape.. however Obama is doing all that he can do to destroy everything!!!!

I WOULD LIKE TO REMARK ON THE COMMENT OF STRIP MINING. MY HUSBAND WORKS FOR A STRIPOP MINING COMPANY AND YES HE HAS A MEDICAL CARD AND A 401 K PLAN AND A DENTAL AND VISION PLAN. GETS PAID TOP DOLLAR JUST LIKE A COAL MINER. I LOVE THESE PEOPLE THAT GET ON HERE AND TALK ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT THEY DON'T KNOW ABOUT. AND YES LOGGING DOES DO ALOT MORE DAMAGE THAN STRIPPING DOES. LOGGING DOES NOTHING WHEN THEY ARE FINISHED LOGGING. STRIP MINES PLANTS BACK TREES AND GRASS SOME EVEN MAKE THE VIEW BETTER. HAVE YOU EVERSTOPPED AND REALLY LOOKED AT A SPOT AFTER THEY HAVE FINISHED WITH A JOB AND PLANTED BACK THE TREES AND ALL IT REALLY IS PRETTY. TAKE A GOOD LOOK AROUND SOME THINGS ARE NOT AS THEY SEEM. SOME PEOPLE FORGET THAT MINING FED THEM AS KIDS, NOW STRIP MINING IS FEEDIND MY KIDS AND I'M NOT SORRY FOR THIS IT PAYS MY BILLS AND IT'S AN HONEST LIVING. PEOPLE ALWAYS HAVE A NEGATIVE LOOK ON THINGS IN MCDOWELL. PEOPLE THIS IS ALL WE HAVE [MINING,STRIP MINING, AND THE RAILROADS] THIS IS ALL OF THE BIG PAYING JOBS IN MCDOWELL. PEOPLE THAT DON'T EVEN LIVE HERE ARE BAD ENOUGH LET ALONE OUR OWN DOWNING OUR JOBS. THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME HAVE AN OPION.

I hope you live where the water is unaffected and he will retire in 20 years or less unless you're willing to move. According to some sources, the coal from this type of mining will be mostly done within 2 decades unless they go for the lower quality seams.

What is Mountaintop Removal?
Mountaintop removal is a relatively new type of coal mining that began in Appalachia in the 1970s as an extension of conventional strip mining techniques. Primarily, mountaintop removal is occurring in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. Coal companies in Appalachia are increasingly using this method because it allows for almost complete recovery of coal seams while reducing the number of workers required to a fraction of what conventional methods require.

The US Environmental Protection Agency defines mountaintop removal as follows:

“Mountaintop removal/valley fill is a mining practice where the tops of mountains are removed, exposing the seams of coal. Mountaintop removal can involve removing 500 feet or more of the summit to get at buried seams of coal. The earth from the mountaintop is then dumped in the neighboring valleys.”

There are 6 main components of the mountaintop removal process:

Usually I don't reply back to ignorant remarks such as yours, but pretty much everything that you have typed is pretty much ignorant(Probably stems from a low IQ such as yours)First off, I don't feel that President Bush actually done that great of a job. The only thing that he was concerned with was finishing the war in which his dad started.. And if you would ever read any statistics there are a very large number of people in McDowell County that work on surface mines. And as for Me!!!(The dum a**) well I'm not bragging I am very fortunate and thank God every day to be able to provide a GOOD living for my family and guess what... I do have insurance Which is provided by the company unlike the state. And as for trying to twist things with a person not agreeing with Obama, Quit trying to play the racist card, it's childish and pathetic. If you would have enough common sense to look at what the Cap and Trade would do. Especially to the older people that are on a fixed income that are already having it hard to even afford their medicine to try to survive, then I would hope that you could at least look at it from another point of view. But I doubt that you would. I know your kind!!!!!!!!!!

How does mountaintop removal affect the economy?
Mountaintop removal is a mining technique designed, from the very start, to take the labor force out of the mining operation. According to the bureau of labor statistics, in the early 1950’s there were between 125,000 and 145,000 miners employed in West Virginia; in 2004 there were just over 16,000. During that time, coal production increased. In addition, the coal-bearing counties of Appalachia are some of the poorest in the nation, despite the fact that some of the greatest wealth is being extracted from them.

Daily Horoscope for December 27

Taurus

Make a big effort to spend time with people you didn't see on Christmas Day, especially if they're older than you or are having a bad time at the moment. You're brimming over with compassion and empathy, which will be really appreciated by anyone who's on the receiving end of them. You're also in the mood to make allowances for people, and that will help enormously.
