This is absoulutely indignant......I was forced to move in the 3rd grade - nobody counseled me- I turned out just fine. I moved from 8th grade to a high school with 4000 kids. I adjusted just fine...This is just pathetic. I will vote NO NO NO. Get over it REG 17/Mala. Our kids can make it if we LET them. I'm sure he;'s got some goody goody buddy all lined up for this job. ARGH!!!!!!!!!

"<em>He said parents have been asking for transition assistance for a long time. They would like someone to help prepare their children emotionally and practically, helping them to understand their new schedules and to figure out such things as how to open their lockers and finding a helpful adult in their new building.</em>"

If kids can't understand a schedule or figure out how to open a locker, then the education system has already failed them.

Then what are the guidance counselors for? Why can't all the epcial ed teachers, assistants and all the gym/music be available in hallways during the forst couple weeks during the transistion to close this gap.

And by the way - my parents helped me understand the schedule etc. And how hard is it to open a locker. Again this is ridiculous and any parent who wants a Transition Counselor is obviously not interesting in parenting, they are looking for MORE BABYSITTERS.

I think this is a great idea and every school system in CT should have multiple transition counselors. We shouldn't be so smug as to think that our children should even have to attempt to go to a new school on their own. Oftentimes, a new environment leads to new experiences, which teaches a child how to cope in the real world. We should prevent this from happening no matter what the cost. Remember, parents cannot be with child at all times, so transition counselors will be there to comfort the child during those times when parents are unavailable by cell phone. It's no wonder these kids crash the minute they get behind the wheel.

This is misapplication of scarce resources.

Eliminate a teaching position to help children feel good? Why not have guidance counselors provide pamphlets and a modicum of help to affected children? It would be a better outcome because the child would be actively involved in resolving his or her "transition" problems. That is part of growing up.

I am the parent of three children ranging from elementary school to high school. This is just another example of parent's not being capable of doing or not wanting to do THEIR jobs. Enough already. My new motto is that if everyone would do their job as a parent...mine wouldn't be so hard.
