You say that we are going to tax the grid with all of the additional power required for charging EVs... let me ask you a question... Have you bought a new TV lately? Maybe more than one? The average power usage for a 50" Plasma TV is around $130... about $15 a year less then if I charged my car everyday. How many people have bought new HDTVs in the last year?(Especially with the analog transmission ending this month)
As you said, EVs aren't for everyone, but they can be a practical solution for many without breaking the grid.

Where do you think the power that charges the batteries comes from?
If everyone charged their cars at home, demand for electric would surge, and prices per Kw would skyrocket.
