I guess I'm one of the nuts, Boris... I own two production electric cars, one of which is a test bed for new technology...

You say that we are going to tax the grid with all of the additional power required for charging EVs... let me ask you a question... Have you bought a new TV lately? Maybe more than one? The average power usage for a 50" Plasma TV is around $130... about $15 a year less then if I charged my car everyday. How many people have bought new HDTVs in the last year?(Especially with the analog transmission ending this month)

As you said, EVs aren't for everyone, but they can be a practical solution for many without breaking the grid.

These guys are still nuts.
Where do you think the power that charges the batteries comes from?
If everyone charged their cars at home, demand for electric would surge, and prices per Kw would skyrocket.

I'm Impressed: Responses from ALL over the place! Ohio, Mass,VA, RI, even CT!People out there actually READ the Courant!

Gas Station? Phooey! Nice to plug her in at home! Not to deal with ANY part of the Oil Racket!Oh! I love to cruise into gas stations, to wash my windshield, and drive OUT!

EVentually, it's a chicken and egg thing: When they, Sheeple, buy them(EV's) they will come: High speed charge stations, like Bob Aronson had back in the 70's. A 240 volt 3 faze service drop that could RUN his on board charger that could crank out 300 amps!ANY EV could have charged there! It's "How much money do you want to spend on a hi-power electronic charger?" No free lunch, the laws of physics are in effect til further notice. You have to put BACK the power you used plus, paying the piper, ya might say, about 20% loss, in the process, but that's FAR more efficient than a gas or Diseasel rig!Only thing better is an electrically powered train, but they run on extension cords,(Catenary)!I ran those for years! Used to think IF it works so well for trains, it can for cars?I've run Steam, Diesel and electric trains. it's Electric, hands down!

Something to think about: Go UP, say, 5-6 miles and you CAN'T breathe!THIS is ALL we got for liviable atmosphere? Scary! You Bet!We pump too much crap in the only air we have! And you CAN make your own electricity, solar displays, wind turbines, a bike treadmill, what ever you can create? Oil? I don't think so? forgetabout veggie oil, as that's a finate thing? Don't ya think there will be a guy with a pump and meter out back of restaurants ready to SELL you their grease? I do. Sunlight STILL is free even in Corrupticut. They haven't taxed it.... YET!

Planet Hero Bob! GM sure blew it with the EV. They would have sold like hotcakes last year. Hybrid everywhere, from Honda and Toyota. Too bad the taxpayer got stuck bailing out the GM dinosaur. What happened to "capitalism, survival of the fittest...?" and Im a longtime GM fan...Solar COULD put enough into the grid, not just photovoltaic but solar thermal on a large scale in the southwest..I read that a 100 sq mile area of Arizona desert covered with solar thermal collectors could produce electricity for the entire country.
