As a 19 year old, 16 year resident of the Haddam/Higganum area and having a cousin that knew the victim through school it is hard to believe such a hanus crime could happen in such a small, sleepy town when riding dirtbikes and ATVs on public roadways is usually the biggest crime happeninging in our town. But in light of the most recent incedent i have recalled many other horrible things that have happened in or around the haddam area like the Old Lyme bus accident on Route 9N last fall, I was acctually fishing in the haddam resivoir when i got a call asking if i knew anyone and if i could se the emergency vehicles from where i was, but in my 19 years and 16 of them in Haddam/Higganum i have noticed that there seems to be a growing problem with what seems like ramdom crime. Just the other night i remember hearing on TV of three suspicious vehicles in and around haddam breaking and entering and stealing peoples jewlery and money. When we first moved to Haddam in 1992 we almost never locked our doors, now it is hard for me to sleep at night knowing some one could pull into the driveway and go through any of out cars or just walk through our yard taking what the please, this really scares me because im 19 and i have put a lot of work and time into my things like my truck and my mountain bike and the reality of knowing some one and just "up and walk off" with something any given night keeps that thought in the back of my mind all day. Even now, while Im at work I sit and wonder if all of my things will be there when I get home tonight. I also always have an un-easy feeling when I leave for work and leave my mom at home and she is still in bed or in the shower, now being 19 my mom and I dont always see eye to eye but i still worry everyday for her safty and for the safty of my belongings.

I don't usually comment but feel the need to address your post. You do not need to repeatedly state your age as it is obvious to me because you only seem to care about your belongings and material things. Your concern should be with your friends and family. Not that I would want anyone to take my possessions but I would gladly make that trade off for the safety of my husband and children. I have lived in this town my entire life also. I chose to raise my children here for many reasons. It is still safer here than most towns. A lot of the problems stem from the lack of respect that the younger generations have for each other, their parents, and the community.

Lets get over it. It was an isolated crime that could have happened anywhere. I mean, the murder probably didn't even happen in Haddam. He just dumped the body there because his family owns the property there. This is still a great town and yes, things do happen. Let's move on. He surrendered which, in a sense, says he has a bit of character than these murderers in Hartford or New Haven who just shoot and run.

of course lack of respect would come up now...haddam mom..all he was doing was stating his opion of what our town is coming to..and you cant say the lack of respect the younger generation has..becuase not all of us are like that..in 20 years..well be doing more wiht our lives than you ever did wiht yours..doctors lawyers...and your both telling me that you werent a little crazy when you were younger...right now all we should be doing is prayering for the fammily and friends of both the victim and the person who did this..it was a sad thing that happened in this small sheltered town..and maybe this will knock alot of sense into our generation...but please dont say this "its frightening knowing that thses children will be running our government in twenty years" cuase well be doing a hell of a better job than the government now....

Ben, the HELL with the Haddam Mom. Your post was genuine and from your heart. Yes, you are only 19 and you should not have to worry about your stuff of leaving your Mom alone. You sound like a good young man. Stay safe and good luck. I hope nothing ever happens to you or your family.

Things I know for a fact as someone who knew both the victim and his killer:
-Stefan Lasak believed in honor and this had nothing to do with any kind of affair with Ben's wife.
-Ben's wife left him for a very good reason. I won't go into details because it's not my place, but if Stefan had anything to do with that it had absolutely nothing to do with seduction.

I grew up with stefan. I wen to school with him. Lived with my parents at 195 injun hollow rd. in Haddam Neck. He was a good kid. He had a habit of always doing the rite thing. If he saw you doing something wrong, he would say something to your face about it. This guy was abusing his wife and kids, and killed stefan for saying something about it. He was a good kid. The funniest person I ever met. he could make fun of you to your face, and it would be so good, all you could do is laugh. Haddam Neckers are more than close neighbors. We know everything about eachother. We volunteer at the fair together every year. He was there always. He was a good kid, and didn't deserve this. He deserved better. He should be driving down the road in his truck honking at you as he passes by still. Wearing that same old ball cap. He was a good kid. I wasn't best friends with him, esp lately with being in the army, and now rejoining, I didn't keep up with him much. The best part of my days at school was riding the bus home, knowing stefan was going to do or say many funny things on the hour bus ride. No matter how crappy a day at school, you had an hour ride of entertainment listening to him. He coinded dozens of phrases, complete originals. He was a good kid. He always had to be honest, and do the rite thing, and for this, his life is at end. The story you should be telling instead of the newest report about who died, is the story of his life. This was a creative minded individual, who could knock and great comedian out of the park, who worked hard every day, had a great carisma about him, and now he's gone. You should write about that, because he was, a good kid.

Talking about someone "bangin" somones wife at this point is so incredibly wicked I can't stress it enough. I know all of the people involved and this was not the case whatsoever, however if ignorant wicked people like you keep talking this way and feeding into media bull-crap you will be hurting an innocent woman and her two tiny children more than you know! Yes, as someone who knows all people involved there was a very good reason for this woman to leave her husband and romanitic reasons was not it!!! Did it ever cross anyone's mind that possibly this man was incredibly unstable and that was a good reason for her to leave and protect her children? He did just murder someone right? Anyone who knows these people know that the media is feeding everyone a bull-crap story and that all people involved are suffering incredibly do to a mental illness and subtance abuse issues.

I believe that everyone should just stop assuming about the situation and respect the friends and family of Stefan. Keep the negative and non relative comments to yourself. When someone you love dies how would you feel if people were writing about it saying things that aren't possibly true about what really happened. This angers me. I knew Stefan he was a great guy and he doesn't deserve all this bickering and bullshit. I came across another Forum where someone thought it would be amusing to say that it was typical redneck drama. Stereotyping honestly? i grew up in the town next to East Haddam and everyone i know and went to high school with are very educated and smart people. AS WELL as my friends in East Haddam. Things like this could happen in any town. The next time someone writes an immature stupid comment like that i pray that something doesnt happen to someone they love, someone that never deserved anything as horrible as having their life taken away by someone else. Needless to say you wouldn't want to see any negative comments after their death either. Respect the people around you. My prayers go out to all of his family and friends. Rest in Peace Stefan. <3

The old rule: if you can't say something nice, or at least in a resectful manner, don't say it.
Everyone involved deserves respect, especially the families of James and Lasak. Blogs need to be better surveyed to prevent malicious, unwitting commentaries. It's a shame that people can just right what they want, hurt people they don't know.
Rememer the teenage gilr who hung herself because of a cruel chat that was a lie created, moreover, by a parent? Please think before saying brutal things.
