Is it just me? Or has it seemed like since the new laws regarding treatment of dogs has caused a increase in stray dog's in the neighborhood around 10th street?
Yesterday there was a group of at least 5-6 dog's of mixed breed's running loose in the area, they were even barkiing at peole who were just out walking around, scaring folks who were not brothering them, at least two where females who were in 'heat'; whick I guess would explain some of the other's actions, but why are they all out running around loose in the first place.
Last September new laws went on the books regarding the leashing of dogs, their care and maintaince, and what heppens to owners who let their dogs attack people with a increase in what will happen to them if they hurt somebody badly - you can go to State Jail, now!!!
When it first went into effect you could see the Animal Control people all over the place, since then I haven't seen them at all! Yet all of a sudden, there is a big increase in stray dogs all over the place! And not a officer in sight!!!!
Forget calling one over the weekend, they can only be contacted via KPD, which unles there is a major attack by a stray dog, could take up to a hour to get any kind of responce from them, why can't they get somebody out BEFORE somebody is bitten, huh??
The first few day's of the new laws, they; the animal control offficers, were out tryig to write as many tickets as they could, but since then, nothing! Shortly afterwards there a bunch of stray dogs running in packs all over the 10th street neighbourhood! Guess all the people who got tickets decided to turn them loose instead of dealing with what caused them to get the ticket to begin with, I guess?
People, don't get a dog if your not going to take care of them, don't simplly trun them loose in the neigbourhood if they become a "pain in the ass" to take care of, be a grown up and step up to what you need to do to be a adult!

This is a huge problem in Killeen. Problem is, anytime I've had to call Animal Control, it has been on a weekend, and if you get anyone to come out at all, you're lucky. I was told on a Saturday that they only had 2 Animal Control Officers for all of Killeen. The City Council needs to get their priorities straight. Instead of spending millions on a recreational water park, they should use those millions to improve city services, like hiring additional Animal Control officers.

People are so quick to blame the City Officials. The truth of the matter is there is a deployment coming up in January. You can set your Calendar by this too, sparky. Just on the cusp of every deployment there is a huge increase in the number of strays. This is because there are Soldiers turning them loose in the street before they deploy because they don't know what to do with them. You say we need more animal control officers. I say we need more shelters. You are right about animal control not being able to be contacted on the weekends though. Loose dogs running around are often put off on the Police Officers. What are they supposed to do with them? Take them to Jail?

We only have one "no kill" shelter and it is called Second Chance. It's constantly full. This shows that there are some people that care about their animal actually going to a loving family instead of being put to sleep. But call them on any given day and you will, more than likely, hear that they are full. So...we need more animal shelters.

What do we do about Soldiers 'dumping' their dogs off into the street for lack of a better solution? Well...what can you do?

It's a shame because it's a lose - lose situation for the animal.

I gave up on the dog catchers a long time ago. I called to complain about the city letting pit bulls out for adoption. the lady told me they are just like other dogs. collies kill people too.

with a person so stupid working at the dog cathing place i never bothered to contact them about anything.

this was Years ago and now the council finally decided they had to do something since pit bulls are taking over killeen. not just the bad areas, but the whole dang city.

I called Animal Control today and they never even came. There's 2 pits running around loose in my neighborhood. I live by a school so there is always kids walking around. I'm afraid that these dogs are going to bite on of them. I can't even let my dogs run loose in my backyard because of these dogs. If I do, all the dogs fight through the fence.

Yes we need more animal shelters. Or there needs to be a stricter policy on adopting animals. There are a lot of stray cats that run around too. It is ridiculus

2 years ago I went out for what I thought would be a nice late night bike ride on the bike trail. I decided to push it a little up past the high school a piece. As I rode past the funeral home that's close to the school, I had two dogs running at me from the little yard next to the home. The attack attempt from these wild dogs lasted from middle of 38th all the way up to teller by shopping center with the IGA on Rancier. I was able to flag down a keystone cop thinking that I would get some assistance in getting the dogs the hell away from the area. NOPE ! They just half-assed their search for them and instead got the bragging rights about how I had no lights on my bicycle. A homeless guy I sometimes talk to at a gas station near my house told me that these same 2 dogs has been well known for years and these so called civil servants refuse to do nothing about them. I say screw worrying about if the lazy bums at city council or city enforcement will ever lift a finger. Just take actions into your own hands and ask questions later. The only thing these overpaid jackals care about is gestapo smoking ban enforcements and butterfly exhibits.

Oh.......DON'T FORGET MORE FOURPLEXES AND URBAN COOKIE CUTTER HOUSE SUBDIVISIONS! Because the city council needs their own money before everybody else gets their relief.

Ifyou think we need more animal control officer (which I totally agree) you have to address your council members and make noise. Animal control is part of the Police Department, and whenever they get funding for personnel, they opt for police officers, not animal control officers. Until leadership in PD changes that appreciates animals as having to be controlled and maintained, there will not be adequate animal control personnel. And just think if they ever got educated in their fields and really knew what they are doing!!! Wouldn't that be something?

HAHAH! Tell the crooked council members on College street about it. They don't work for any average joes unless you bribe them to do so. Idiots make me laugh all the time with that kind of crap.
