I'm getting kind of annoyed by all the blatant disregard for traffic laws by tourists and even some locals. Just to name a couple LAWS that should be enforced more often:
1: If a driver is not traveling the maximum speed limit on a highway they must travel in the right hand lane(slow lane) so as not to impede the flow of traffic
2: The center shared left hand turn lane is not a merge lane. Police, tourists, and locals including myself use it for this. We should all be aware how dangerous this is and practice extreme caution. For starters, don't drive in the center lane while waiting for a break in traffic. If you must turn into the center lane to merge, stop, put your turn signal on to let the other drivers know your intentions, and wait for a break. I've seen too many close calls because drivers attempting to merge on the highway decide to drive as far as half a mile or more in the center lane waiting to get over causing the drivers that want to use the center lane for its intended purpose to miss their turns or make hasty maneuvers to get over.
3: Use your turn signals, you have them for a reason. Nothing bugs me more than to be cut off or stopped short for someone making a turn with no signal.
4: Pedestrians crossing the road only have the right of way at designated crosswalks. I mention this because so many locals prefer to take the beach road in the summer as to avoid the stop and go traffic on the bypass. Its bad enough that they did away with the passing zones in kitty hawk and nags head. Its quite aggravating to get stuck behind someone that wants to stop for every tourist trying to go to the beach. You don't have to stop for every person waiting to cross the road anywhere they want unless they are at a crosswalk. It doesn't matter how attractive they are. Quit being a pervert and keep driving.
5: This next one goes out to the drivers that use the center lane on the bypass for left turns where its not allowed(w. durham; shell station at corner of baum/158; KDH 7-11; mama kwan's, etc.) God forbid you get struck by an oncoming car heading the opposite direction turning left respectively towards: k-mart; sunsations/duck donuts plaza; sunsations/coastal edge plaza; ocean acres dr. You would be completely at fault. Its not worth it in my opinion. Take another route. For example, take west avalon if you live on durham or a connecting street. Avoiding a head-on collision is worth the slight detour.
6: Finally, to finish off my rant that I'm sure will be judged, discredited, and disapproved by other topix ranters I would like to mention the law on headlights. Headlights must be used from sunset to sunrise, when visibility is less than 400ft, and whenever windshield wipers are functioning. Its hard enough to see anything in the rain as it is but when other drivers disregard this law and proceed to drive blindly it puts other drivers at great risk. If you've ever pulled out onto the bypass during a storm thinking your lane was clear only to get honked at by an approaching driver with no lights then you know what I'm talking about.

I wish the police would enforce more of these laws rather than just shooting radar and writing tickets for speeders on the lowe's end of w landing or colington rd's new speed limit zone. Quota can be met in other ways than petty speeding tickets.

I agree with most of what you said. But where does it say we can't use the turning lane to turn left into the 7-11 in KH?

The word "Must" is the problem. NO ONE MUST turn left. Turn right and find a way to turn around down the highway. Or hit a street with a stoplight. That also will keep you legal and save a life. I will NEVER move into the right lane so someone can can merge out of the turning lane. I would be helping them break the law, so I don't move over.

Let's add this: If you travel to or from corolla and you can't seem to push the gas peddle fast enough to go within 10 mph of the speed limit than you should PULL THE HELL OVER AND LET OTHERS GET TO BY!!!!! WE know you see the 3 mile long traffic jam you are causing behind you, you jerk!
If people did that in their hometown they would be run into a ditch or worst. Why do they think it's ok to do it here?

This is not a limited access highway. If you are planning on making a left turn in the next mile, you are certainly allowed to drive in the left lane.

Pay attention to where the solid yellow line ends and turns in to white dashed lines and you'll see where/when it's legal to get into the turn lane and make your left.

I guarantee you if you drive more than 1/4 mile in the turning lane (especially with no signal on), and a cop sees you, you will be pulled over and givin a lecture and a ticket.

Regarding #5: I almost hit a moped the other night. He was turning left into Durham Street as I was merging to turn left onto 5th Street/Kmart. It was dark and rainy, around 8pm, and scared the shit out of me.

If I'd hit him, yeah it would have been his fault, but that wouldn't have made the rest of my life any easier. Let's be smart people!

Oh! I have to correct my previous post(#10). I thought the guy I was responding to said the "turning lane" when he said the left lane, sorry. D*m Topix won't let you edit or "ignore" people.

Actually I'm more impressed this year with the sensibility of drivers here than I have been in the past 20 years. I notice more people hypermiling. If you're smart you now realize, in this oppressive monkeyed up economy, that you must minimize the cost of operating a motor car. Brakes for example. I try not to use them. Soon as I see the light turn yeller I'm coasting. Don't care who else is in a big hurry or who is trying to make a left turn on the bypass.

I have also noticed people being more sensible about following distance and rapid acceleration.

I have noticed that not many of you seem not to care about the new speed zones. Apparently the cops don't either. They are more interested in the higher revenue generating traffic tickets. I try and remember to slow down to 45mph but often forget.

When I see other drivers constantly changing lanes, racing up to stop lights, riding their brakes, tailgating, rapidly accelerating I just kinda laugh at them. It cost them more to drive than it does me.

Alien, great post. I think as we (me!) get older you learn to be a smarter driver. Start your drive a few minutes earlier and don't be in a huge hurry. Be cause of the economy many of us are keeping our cars a lot longer so we might as well treat them gently. I drive a 14 year old Chevy that I bought new, 179,000 miles. I plan to drive it a few more years. I don't hot rod it, I'm easy on the brakes.

Also, left turns are supposed to yield to drivers going straight across- example, light at Food Lion going across to the Walmart.

And quit making left turn from the opposite turn lane!!! You CANNOT cross a double yellow line to make a left turn....DAMMIT!
