I lived across the street

from Denise Johnson when it happened--it was on Norfolk St.

A few years later I knew the cop who was the first on the scene at pre-dawn when the house fire call came through his radio.

She supposedly died from numerous shallow (weak) stab wounds, indicative of a female assailant. IIRC, they were around the neck and chest.

The killer(s) turned on the stove a and oven all the way up to 500 degrees and started a fire inside the house (which was an old 60's cinder block house which didn't burn well) and also started a fire in the car out front.

Last she was seen alive was on the old Bayside Amoco store's CCTV camera with a short-haired blonde female.

A lot of people were questioned but a guy she had dated was grilled heavily, but let off. I knew him and knew he did not kill her.

We all thought it was a jealous female killer from the beginning, maybe someone who didn't want Denise seeing the girl's ex or something.

Another neighbor on Denise's side of the street once told me he always had a hunch but was too freaked out even 5-6 years later to say anything about it.

Poor girl, she was always getting into some kind of trouble. Not long before, she had wrecked into my BF's car while she was backing out of her driveway. Always something. she was a sweetheart, but always making bad decisions, etc.

Sad that a murderer is still running out there loose.

...And I don't mean to denigrate her when I say it was "always something." People who knew her well and worked with her knew that was part of the total tragedy. Just seemed like she had a hard time catching a break. Weird petty BS always seemed to follow her around, like her driveway accident that same year. But she was such a sweet girl who wouldn't hurt a flea.

I do remember the theory about some weird guy... and it would make sense that no one was ever indicted if that someone happened to already be in prison in VA.

A lanky blond guy could possibly have been mistaken for a blonde female on the Bayside cameras...

Plus...I wonder about this Lanky Dave scenario.

Why would the KDH PD not state it definitively if they know Lanky Dave was the killer, though? They would still give the family and public/press closure if they had DNA evidence or factual evidence incriminating him. They wouldn't just "let him rot in jail in VA" without closing the case here.

Doesn't add up.

I believe the killer was a female and either started the fires afterward herself or came back with help. A lot of the evidence suggested an emotional, angry attack. IIRC, there was evidence of some time between the knife attack and the fires, but not too much because there was smoke in the victim's lungs or something.

So, so sad and terrible!

I hope to the good Lord that the scum of the earth Killer is/are caught one day and pays the highest penalty allowed by law.

I always heard the last scenario, but the Lanky Dave story sounds reasonable, especially if the story about her almost being decapitated is true...Shallow wounds wouldn't almost sever the head from the body.

I don't remember anything about the victim almost being decapitated. The cop I knew was there from the beginning--even was at the autopsy--but of course they probably weren't even supposed to be telling anyone anything about an investigation, and might have not been telling all the details; but it was several years later by the time he told me about it, though.

Near-decapitation would have indicated a much stronger killer. All I remember him saying was there were many shallow stab wounds around the neck. Also, I believe the angles of them indicated a smaller person.

I feel really bad for the family, and I don't want anyone getting pissed that we are discussing this.

I am just think about it occasionally because we were right there and it was so scary!

I hope and pray justice is served whether the killer is behind bars already or not.

I seem to remember a report from Raleigh that stated something about the throat being cut very deeply almost to the point of decapitation(but maybe I'm mistaken)

It's a shame he was grilled as hard as he was but it's just a part of the procedure. He knew that as well. Of course he wouldn't do something like that, he's one of the nicest most level headed people I've met on the beach.

You are confusing two murders on this beach. The woman found at the Carolinian was decapitated.

No...I remember the Carolinian murder AND I was a friend of DJ AND have followed the case since 97..I am pretty sure that one of the state reports mentioned a severe neck trauma resulting in a near decapitation (although I might be wrong-
I have always thought this)

Yessir. I lived on a little side street on the bypass just two blocks East of her when it happened. I worked at Barrier Island Station with her at the time. We both got home late. Me later than her. Very sad. I was asleep when it happened.

They had a big deal on Forensic Files about the solved murder of the woman with her throat cut behind that hotel in Nags Head and what not. Our local authorities only solved that one by accident. Even blind hogs will occasionally pic up an acorn.

They have now long forgotten about that murder.

What can they do about it anyway? They're not homicide detectives.

I'll bet a guy like Harry Bosch could solve the case.

Because "definitive" knowledge would mean the existence of probable cause for an arrest (and hopefully evidential proof beyond a reasonable doubt to present at trial), which in turn would mean seeking an indictment from the grand jury.

Somehow I have come across this video and I am almost certain after watching the video that someone from Florida where she use to live has committed the crime. I also believe that the person knew Denise I am almost certain (don't know why and how) but if you can check the in and out flight details around that week and compare it with people that Denise knew in Florida will give a better idea. The time of arrival of the person was such that no one would have seen him entering or leaving the house and hence there was no question of who Denise was with earlier that day. I believe it was a staged homicide where after the crime the suspect lit the house on fire to cover the prints.

The OP has trolled out 56 comments. Outstanding. Hell. It might not know it's even a troll yet. Time will tell. In all of those comments it has appeared only three times. In each case it's main concern was up trolling. Thats right. Keeping it going. I mean outta the blue it drags up this unsolved case. I gotta admit that I love the way it makes our local police look like idiots, can't help but love that, but why outta the blue this? I'll tell ya why. It's a lonely troll. Treat it as such.
