Seems like an awful lot of houses being jacked these days. I know the economy is bad but there needs to be more patrols - day and night - looking for this kind of stuff. 17 houses in one day - at least someone was "working"

Wow, where did you see 17 houses in one day? I know that in my area, I have seen quite an increase in patrols. I was wondering why.

There was a rumor and I don't know how true. From what I heard their is a dirty cop on the force in KDH that is in on it with these kids. That he runs a bunch of them and shares in the loot from the B&E also that he smokes dope with them. Have no idea which one they where speaking of.
I have always thought there was something wrong with that PD there. Just couldn't figure out what. They are not like ours here in VA at all.

The cops are too busy collecting revenue for the state by writing speeding tickets. They don't want to be bothered with real crime. Besides, most of the local cops would rather take turns giving towler a reach-around.

I highly suspect that's a load of shit. We have ALOT of unoccupied homes full of expensive "Rent Me" gear ... flat screen TVs and whatnot ... easy targets, happens every year. Last year in one case they pulled up with a moving van in broad daylight and just filled her up and drove away.

Apparently you have never had a loved one killed or injured by someone who thought it would fun to drive to fast or drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. These too are REAL CRIMES. As far as the reach around comment....grow up and at least try to make your point without sounding like a 12 year old, hormone riddled, little boy. you sound like one of those people who have a lead foot and hate being caught. Try abiding by the law for a change.

As far as the comment by Huh in reference to Officer Shane, if you knew him personally you would know that there is no way he could ever do something of that nature. He is one of the most upstanding citizens I have ever met and think KDHPD has made a grave error in his dismissal.

Also, for those that don't know, there are 1236 people per square mile living in KDH. Have you ever counted how many streets there are in KDH, no to mention the Bypass and Beach RD? How, I ask, do you expect the police department to possibly patrol every square inch of their town 24 hrs a day to keep these robberies from happening? Crime is everywhere and yes, it would be nice to stop these crimes from happening, but that takes money...money to hire more officers, buy more uniforms, buy more patrol cars, etc.... I'm always amazed at how people find it so easy to criticize as an outside observer. Walk in their boots for a day while wearing a kevlar vest and putting their lives at risk and THEN criticize.

I don't expect them to cover every square inch of the town but jesus christ, when 17+ houses are broken into, it is time to get the F@CK out of the bushes waiting for someone speeding. Stay the F@CK out of 7-11 where you are posted for hours at a time. Stay the F@CK away from in front of the monument with your radar gun. Stop F@cking stopping people for the bullshit taillight out and do your f!cking job.

Look, I get it, we really don't have law enforcement down here. We have meter maids with guns. Having said that, when a high profile crime or crimes take place, if they are not going to attempt to catch the perps, at least drive through the neighborhoods and act like a police officer.

As far as walking a day in their boots.....You have got to be kidding me if you think they are in any danger from anyone but themselves. Tell them to go walk a day in the boots of a real police officer in Durham or Charlotte. Once they clean up from sh!tting themselves, then let them come back and tell everyone what it is like to be a real cop.

To clarify, with my comment I was not laying blame as to why it happens, just that it happens every year (because we are easy targets) and that blaming a new officer does not make any sense, happened before he got here, will happen after he is gone.

The real problem is the Us vs Them that some people take with the police ... they are here to Serve and Protect, which most do ... if you consistently have problmes with the police maybe you should reconsider where the problem really is (oh mirror mirror on the wall ...)

Hey ferngirl, maybe some individuals have an issue with the "cops" in Kill Devil Hills BECAUSE they themselves have been injured or had a loved one killed by an individual that was speeding or under the influence and the "cops" DID NOTHING!!! Now THAT is a real crime!! Or maybe they have been harassed and threatened by the "cops" because they don't operate the "appropriate" vehicle, have the right last name, or big enough bank account. MAYBE they are sick of seeing them sitting on their asses at the pizza/donut places or the 7-11 and not doing shit when they COULD be out patrolling the many streets and keeping their eyes open instead of talking on their cellphones and running red lights (yes, I witnessed this happen on several occasions!)MAYBE if the "cops" actually looked out for ALL the law abiding, upstanding citizens of KDH that needed them (even if they are not friends of the "cops" or government officials or wealthy enough to give bribes.. I mean "DONATIONS"... to the individuals to get them elected in the first place) then they wouldn't have such an issue with the "cops". As stated before, the local "cops" need to spend a week in a city somewhere like New York, New Orleans, D.C. or LA and IF they actually last the week they can come back here and understand just how easy their jobs are.
BTW its "be fun" and "too fast" not "to fast" If you are going to insult someone else at least do it correctly.

The best statement I have seen on this thread. These guys/girls would shit their pants if they had to work a day in Washington, DC, NYC, Chicago, or even Durham, or Charlotte as stated above.

just curious if you know how many felons/drug traffickers/ robbery/ violent crime suspects are found by doing routine traffic stops?

seriously some of ya'll complain that they are doing their job, then the next day complain they are not doing their job. How do you know these officers dont know what its like to be a "real" cop. Many of these guys did not start out here, they worked as a officer some where else. Yes, its small town here, but there are still "real" crimes committed here every day. How quickly were these crimes reported?

and btw i had to ride through town twice today (4 times round trip) and saw several police cars, most of them between the highways on the north end. Heck, two weeks ago I saw 5 KDHPD cars on the beach road patrolling, so yeah, they are out there. Seems to me the problem is number of officers per square mile, too many problem areas. I also wonder if something more pressing was occurring while these robberies were going on. Traffic accident possibly? Domestic in progress? Its easy to be an armchair quarterback and say they are not doing their job, but in reality we have no clue what they were doing at the time

There is corruption every where.I am not the one to defend any and all cops too. We had a young 12 year old black girl here who only looked mature raped by a black police officer. A beautiful girl robbed of her innocence. So please say if aint so to someone who buys your crap coming out of that mouth.

I have noticed this Winter, like every Winter that now it is open season on residents, that most of the Nags Head wannabees are pulling citizens for minor speeding and seat belt infractions between the school zone and Jockey's Ridge and South. I travel that route every day. I can see it and hear it on my scanner on a daily basis. Lotta money to be made on a seat belt infractions. Good money from what I understand. But they never see any of it unless they get some kind of a bonus for screwing us up the ass. I'm sure they have other more important but less desirable things to deal with. Like armed drug dealers bringing cocaine into Dare county from Elizabeth City and Columbia. Well that's probably all "sanctioned" by government officials anyway. Not withstanding, like some Clint Eastwood movie, they ain't gonna wanna line up in front of those professional entrepreneurs anyway. Damn if I would either for minimum wage. Those people are professionals protecting their enterprise. They probably are better trained on their own weapons than the rookie cops around here. Get real people. If you were a cop around here and fought hard for a GED, because you couldn't make it through the school system when you were a young redneck, and making a poverty level income, trying to learn how to load the clip in your cheap black composite stock pistol state recommended or issued pistol, you would probably hang out hang out at the 7-11, safe in your charger, with the rest of them. I know I would in your hopeless position. It's fairly safe there. Don't think for a second that they are trying to protect your home or your safety. You're gonna have to handle that on your own. There is no money to be made on robberies, break ins or home invasions. That's just annoying paper work for cops around here. And Besides, they might get their asses kicked. In KDH they like lurking on the side roads, around curves, hidden like sharks, early in the mornings, after the criminals have already safely concluded their profitable nights of drug dealing, with pen and paper waiting for citizens on their way to work to make a minor mistake and exceed the 25 mph speed limit. I guess they use they same cowardly tactics in Kitty Hawk. I don't know. I get my drugs in Nags Head. That's a fairly safe way to make a living and have state benefits as a cop. There is a great amount of revenue to be collected there as well. Hell. They will never have to deal with any real crime here so why not just justify their jobs as bureaucrats with pen and paper? That's the way it is.

How did that happen????This has to be the most over policed area along the east coast,on a square mileage basis!

I recently took a trip and visited several resort towns south of here and in all honesty,I see more cops here in ONE DAY,than I did my entire trip.
