We all see them and choose to ignore them. As a lone female, I do it myself. However, I ran into an individual who opened my eyes to the problem last week. Once a productive individual, and still very intelligent, he said he is now living in a tent and had congregated with other individuals in the same situation. It really opened MY eyes as to how lucky I really am...SO, are there any provisions in Dare or Currituck to house the homeless? Does Interfaith have any ideas or provisions??

The Churchs are helping. They have set up shelters to give people a place to spend the night and have a meal

What are you doing about it, I mean other than posting here?

Is everywhere now. There are no jobs for middle class people late 40s, 50s, 60s who used to earn a relatively decent living to support their families and put their children through school. The economy has taken a toll on everyone, especially in small places like Dare County (no jobs that pay decent enough to support a family -- maybe 5 out of how many people permanently reside here?). Everyone needs to be sympathetic to their needs and try and help out wherever they can. Employers and residents... please do not forget where someone really comes from that used to help you out. Especially now that we are entering holidays.

I hope it is food, clothing and something that will help them.

I hope everyone starts to realize that at any given point, you too, could be homeless.... Before you judge someone, stop and think....What happened that made this person homeless....Did they lose their job to a foreign worker who comes and takes jobs just to steal from those who came here? Did they lose someone in their family? Did they get behind in their bills because they were trying to help someone else, and in the process forgot to take care of themselves? Is that woman you see sleeping in the parking lot of a hotel to "proud" to have asked someone to help her before she got too far lbehind....and did you realize that yes, she could live with friends...but has more respect for her body, because they want "something" in return....What would you do if it was you....If you were placed in a hard situation what would you do....If you lost your house to a fire, would you have a place to go....well, you might, but not everyone does.....And sure some of these people have decided to do drugs and drink excessive amounts of alcohol...but for them, maybe it takes them to a place that makes them warmer, makes them forget the situation they are in.....I myself feel sorry for the homeless in this county....A county that would rather build a community center for exercise programs, when they claim they are in an economic crisis...instead of building a homeless shelter....THINK...LOVE EVERYONE, EXCEPT EVERYONE, Remember it could and might happen to you...treat these people the way you wanted to be treated

The only homeless person I see is the guy who goes around in a ragged insulated suit summer and winter with a back pack on. So where are these multitudes of homeless? I do give canned food at food lion as well as blood for the soldiers.

Is truly (and sadly) mentally challenged. i am not being snarly here--I really think he is seriously OCD or some other mental disability that precludes his getting gainful, steady employment or housing. Sad.

If it's the same guy I'm thinking about, if you watch him you'll see he has very strange habits and "rituals" that are tell-tale mental disability hallmarks such as with debilitating OCD.

It can also e=be a sign of Tourette's Syndrome. A guy from my hometown had certain rituals -- especially when crossing the street, and said f@#* you all the time. Once they were able to get him to stay on his meds, he was better.

There are homeless and there are worthless. I feel for the truly homeless but I have very little sympathy for the worthless. Some of the guys that hang out and drink and drug all day were doing the same thing at the peak of the building boom here when there was plenty of work. They had their tool belts but didn't want to work. Now they panhandle and steal to support their habits. There are some programs to try to help them but it is hard to get compliance. I would rather spend my tax money on a shelter for the truly homeless to help them get over a rough patch.

Might be homeless but he has money. There was a time a few weeks ago where it seemed I saw him everywhere.

By pur coincidence, he was at Radio Shack two separate times I was there. Both times he was browsing the music section and while waiting at the check out counter for a part, I saw him pay for a stack of music cd's with a wad of cash. Big bills too, like a couple of hundreds.

So I don't know how the guy makes his money. Perhaps he gets a check at a PO Box from Social Security every month. This is not the kind of money you get from begging on the streets.

Some people choose to live on the streets. Most suffer from some type of mental illness and just can't cope with society. The druggies and alcoholics choose to be that way. No sympathy here for them.

They might be homeless but they're not suffering from any apparent shortage of carbonated malt beverages.

Funny how the most famous homeless person on the outer banks is not homeless.

That guy is very polite and well spoken. I talked to him recently. Some one told me he has a trust fund working for him. I wish I was so fortunate to be able to live so freely without the restraints we all must deal with. Hell. I like him.

He is polite, well spoken and courteous. I understand he is he benificiary of a trust fund. What others may see as mental illness could in fact be self actualization, or maybe just the good fortune to not have to live among the rest of us and our self imposed retraints.

He has a place to go? I truly hope so. I've seen him headed toward some park benches at night, and I always worry about him when the weather gets bad.
