I thought a legisloator would understand that his First Amendment rights don't make him immune from being criticized for what he says when he exercises them.

Don't be a coward Bertram. You said what you believe, now stand behind it. If people condemn you for it and you lose your next election as a result, have the character to understand that people disagree with you and chose to not have you serve as the voice of their views in the legislator.

You "represent" them. Your views should be representative of their views, or someone else should hold the office.

Civil Liberties = The right to entice minors for sex?

That does make me go hmmm.

Oh wait, I see...we are going to deflect attention from the predatory behavior by making it a civil liberties issue. Gotcha. Tally Ho.

We as voters judge our potential elected officials on their character and views. In this time where more and more children are being targeted by sexual deviants it's safe to say that Rep. Joe Bertram's views are in the minority. I guess soon to be ex-Representative Bertram will have to get a job with the ACLU defending people like his sex offender friend instead of protecting the children of Hawaii.
AMEN! ACLU here is your next "face" for the public to ridicule!

"Now we have the Republican Party saying I should be punished for my own personal opinion, and I find that reprehensible."

I've heard of "Yellow Dog" Democrats--so loyal they would vote for an 'old yellow dog' if it were running as a Democrat. now we have "Maui Molester" Democrats--so loyal they will vote for Joe Bertram.

BTW WHERE IS LEON ROUSE THIS SESSION???

"...What he objected to was a law that he said penalizes people for potential rather than actual behavior...."
So Rep Bertram - would you rather the undercover cop went all the way before nabbing the perp?
Give me a break~!

Rep Bertram also testified in a legislative hearing as a private citizen in 2008 against mandatory drug testing for teachers. We can test our cops, cafeteria workers in schools, etc. but no test for teachers? This was even after the arrest of some teachers for using drugs in school. This guy's judgment or lack thereof is scary--and he's a lawmaker???

When a legislator stands up in a public forum -- as a private citizen or in official capacity -- and says "I think this is a bad law", you have to conclude that if the law were to come up for modification, Betram would vote to change the law by making enticement not a crime -- he said it's only a "potential" crime.

Now, why is it improper for his political opponents to point this out?

Speeding.
That's an imaginary crime, too then.
Going 60 in a 35 without hurting someone shouldn't be a crime either, eh?
The enticement is the illegal act, not the rape itself.
C'mon, Joey B, the pot is damaging your judgment.
Your friend is a dangerous perv, just like Galen Fox and Keola Childs.
Sick proclivities know not of party lines.
lolo
speeding is going too fast not something that is imagined.
we all entice youth for something: sports, martial arts, scouting etc. all with the imaginary "you can" is that illegal, no, so enticement is legal

Imaginay crimes like the one your thinking of now against me like swearing or punching me out.. I you do then it's slander or assalult. Until you do it's still imaginary. The "thought" Police needs to rein in themselves before they arrest guys like you.

Now, what are you thinking??????

lolo right back at ya.
Speeding is a crime because it POTENTIALLY endangers others.
You're no lawyer--not even a liberal one.
I totally get the "thought police" idea. I read 1984, too. But this per is no Winston, and Bertram is foolish to have stuck up for him on the basis of an imaginary crime.
By your "logic" is trading child porn acceptable? Is throwing a punch stopping one inch from someone's nose?
Lawyer, no.
Liar, yes.

Did the HYPOCRITIC REPUBLICAN PARTY'S Morality Police publish an advertisement condemning its leader in the State House, REPUBLICAN GALEN FOX when he was CONVICTED OF SEXUALLY MOLESTING A YOUNG GIRL by unzipping her pants and FEELING HER CROTCH while she was groggy on medication when her perents sat across the aisle on an airplane? Of course not. Republicans are never guilty of sex crimes, right? Just ask Larry Craig, the Republican Senator who was CAUGHT SOLICITING HOMOSEXUAL SEX in an airport bathroom.

I am sorry to say that all of you are wrong in condemning Mr. Bertram. Most would say why did he stick his neck out on this controversially emotional issue. Most of you are week and shy away, whereas Mr. bertram stuck his neck out for a friend. something you nothing about. Don't seem like you would stick up for your mother. I like a man to not be afraid to speak up if his conscience feel it is wrong. you'd prefer your rep to shut his mouth until he confers with you, to tell him how to act. He also was the only one to vote no one this law. It is amazing that he did this again with all odds against him. A brave and courageous man. If I knew how, I would have contacted him to vote no. I am not in his district. This law is so bad, it will not stand. It has no legs to stand on. A law of smoke and mirrors, all illusions, The police tell you it's there, but it isn't.

Dude. Electronic enticement is an overt act. There is a thin line between bravery and stupidity.
