This will be repeated over and over in the coming year as the recession hits in the US. In the SF Bay area, layoffs of a few dozen or hundreds occur all the time with no more than a short article in the local newspaper. What is the cost and heart break to those people?

If the Hawaii state government really wanted to help then unilaterally back the debt of Aloha with the "full faith and credit of the state of Hawaii" (after all the US federal government backed up Bear Sterns on Wall Street) but the Governor and legislature had no real "intention" of doing that and "knew that they really had no legal standing" to force Aloha to continue...it was all a "grand stand play" to make it appear that they were "trying to do something" for the masses.

No pensions, no benefits...we are going back to the 1920s and 1930s before the unions.

...."Thank you for serving 35 loyal years with this organization...here is a gold plated watch, a certificate of thanks, your last paycheck....NOW get the h*ll off the property....oh..and Thanks...Social Security and Medicare...watch the "needs" tests to screen you out.

And corporate America wonders "why their employees are not loyal to the management?" The human cost to these loyal employees is just heart breaking.

The tax payers should not have to subsidize the style of life on Molokai or a badly managed airline from going under. Too many who live here live a fanciful version of life expecting racially-based preferences and handouts.

When market economics is not tied to the common good, we have Molokai Ranch or Aloha Airlines experiences. Our government has been telling us to trust market forces. We have and now we pay with family and friends worried about how they will pay their bills. Are more of this coming?

Sad. My parents' generation always had a soft spot for Hawaii because during WWII they were the only airline courteously accommodating to Hawaii's Japanese residents who faced discrimination from other airlines. Lots of history with Aloha. Thanks for all the wonderful memories!

This is the long ripple effect as a result of Hawaiian and Aloha keeping out its past competitors, MidPac, Discovery, etc.
Where was the Union that the employees have been paying dues to?
