This is an unfortunate story.
Did the pickup driver have insurance?
At least the police are conducting toxicology tests for alcohol and drugs on the driver. I would be interested to see what the results of the tests are.

Nice story about Chuck and Kim Pfirrman! I've been friends with Chuck and Kim for more than 25 years now and have witnessed first hand the adversities they've both overcome over the years... and yet have persevered, met the challenges head-on and overcame the adversities. On the day Kim had her accident and fell, the doctors told Chuck that Kim would never walk again and there was no hope. Chuck immediately realizing that their lives would forever be changed, never gave up hope, went home that very evening and worked through the night to completely gut their home, remove all of the carpeting and fill the sunken living room with concrete. He then began a full remodeling of their home to accommodate Kim. He worked tirelessly, day and night until it was done. Kitchen, bathroom, living room...everything now wheelchair accessible. That is just one of many examples of Chuck's commitment and dedication to his wife, Kim and his unconquerable spirit to overcome what would seem insurmountable to most. Rather that give up and wallow in sorrow and self pity, he quickly realized, accepted and then adapted to whatever life handed him. All without remorse, without anger or bitterness and with a quick smile, he took on each challenge and continued to live life to it's fullest. He exemplified that spirit again by working day and night over the past few years custom building their dream home on Maui around Kim's needs. Everything wheelchair accessible and designed to accommodate her life on wheels. Kim also has that unconquerable spirit within, as she too has accepted and adapted to life's adversities with amazing courage and grace. On a recent trip to Maui, Kim told my girlfriend, "that in spite of being in a wheelchair," she "has never been happier." I am certain Chuck had much to do with Kim's happiness!! They fed off of each other and found strength and courage in one another. After 25+ years, Chuck and Kim still have many friends here in the Valley of the Sun around Phoenix, Arizona, who will miss Chuck tremendously. As I mentioned to someone recently "I've never heard his name spoken without her, or hers without his….. It is always been “Chuck & Kim.” "

If the pickup truck driver didn't have adequate insurance she should sue the State of Hawaii for knowingly letting 37% of the driver drive without insurance.

We had an accident here on oahu.....a bus crossing the center line that killed a man with a family...there were no test done on him to check for drugs or alcohol! I would think it was mandatory..BUT I think he had connections!

Ummmm ok...so let's see here, riding a motorcycle has definate risks. This is an unfortunate story but that guy knows the risk of riding motorcycles. It is dangerous. No matter where you are. He should have been thinking more about his family and drove a car.

Those freakin bikes come out of nowhere, and all you here is a buzz pass you buy.
It was unfortunate, but you cannot blame a person for making a left turn, when the bike is coming at them so fast neither can stop.....What about personal responsibility......
THE GUY ALSO OWNS A BOAT, & other pleasure vehicles, & 2 mil dollar piece of property & house...SELL ALL THAT stuff and get a smaller home or go back to the mainland....sue sue sue that all haoles know!!! So lemme get this straight... with no evidence that the motorcyclist was in the wrong and because some motorcyclists are irresponsible... and most of all, because he's white... screw his wife over. OK, got it... just makin' sure I understood how you feel.

Listen WALDO--- Forget the haole part---OK? But it was the lawyers who get there 30% and most of them are white, but for this discussion we won't hold that against them...OK? Society has become a bunch of LET'S BLAME SOMEBODY ELSE FOR THE $HIT I GOT MYSELF INTO! THE ONLY ONE THAT SCREWED UP THIS WOMANS LIFE WAS THE SPEEDING FOOL ON THE BIKE! And he went past a friend of mine that was traveling on that same road--so there were witnesses to his rate of speed. He was going too fast could not stop and SPLAT! I feel sorry for his wife, but HE should have thought about her, and now some feel that to sue the truck owner is a way to get her out of debt!! If she can't make a go here then she needs to go home to her family---or won't they take her without the money to take care of her.........

Perhaps had you presented your position without the inclusion of race I could have taken you more seriously. I'm not going to dispute what your friend said, he was there,I wasn't. If the motorcyclist bore responsibility for the collision, then so be it... it's his fault. I agree with you, lawyers are slightly above reptiles and they do suck the life out of anything they touch, whatever their race. Their function is to try to make everything someone elses fault, that's how they bleed us dry. And I agree with you, if the man's wife can't economically survive here, then maybe it's best she return to the mainland and live with family. Our opinions aren't all that different, I just believe that race should never be a part of the equation. A genuine aloha to you...

Ya know, I really get tired of this bash all the lawyers crud from some posters. Yes, there are some lawyers who give the profession a bad name, just like there are some mechanics; plumbers; electricians; contractors; roofers; teachers; doctors; nurses; salesmen; landlords; etc. etc. etc. who give their professions a bad name. But there are good honest hardworking lawyers out there too, and they don't deserve to be lumped into some dimwits one-bashing-fits-all juvenile commentary. Yeah, I have a son who is a patents/trademarks lawyer. He busted his okole getting into and thru law school and he works about 70-80 hours a week. And he's never done anybody wrong in any shape, form, or fashion. So all you posters who like to lawyer bash, maybe you're just jealous it's not you with the law degree. Some day when you need a lawyer, remember your hateful remarks.

If you drive a motorcycle, you dont care much about your life. Its just that simple. I stopped riding 30 years ago.. would love to, but no way is it worth the risk. Its not that much fun. It is sad, however from this lesson other lives can be saved.

As sad and tragic this story is I wish Mrs. Pfirrman well. May God bless and keep her. I would hope though that toxicology testing was done on Mr. Pfirrman also...not just the truck driver. Two wrongs don't solve anything. Who knows.
