and he is supposed to be a model for our students and this is suppose to be an examplar of character and high values....oh, please....i have children of my own and he is exactly what I don't want my kids to emulate.....give me a break....i'm not a liberal basher etc. but I do know what I want from my children and this legislator is certainly polar opposites of what our kids should be emulating in society....give me a break....is this what society and education is all about...and you wonder why there is so much problems in society .....

It is GREAT to see an American politician who has a view that does not first require a phone call to the party bosses. His constituents are very fortunate to have such a public official.

About Bertram and his partner: "they were unofficially married in 1985 by a pagan witch in a hot spring in the middle of a snowy field in Breitenbush, Ore."

Sounds like part of a comedy routine.

I didn't know he was openly gay. I only met him once but he didn't act outwardly gay. Surprises, surprises.

I hope this clown represents the people who elected him and not only the off-beat fringes of Maui society. He's no statesman in my book. He's more like a kook who got elected by error.

I agree. When you elect somebody they are supposed to represent you and your fellow district members. It is nice to see legislators in our one party system that are NOT Calvin Say's or Coleen Hanabusa's puppets.

I might as well just leave the voting block blank then elect somebody else's puppet. The whole party line thing is only usefull when Dems and Republicans have equal or near equal power. But in Hawaii the system has become corrupted by a very few "leader" democrats with an army of zombie lawmakers blindly walking behind them.

Now you know why Maui is on the other side of the fence. It's yo-yos like this clown.

Bertram is opposed to pharmaceuticals but he wants to legalize marijuana.

And he is the molesters' friend.

Oh. He's a Hawaii Legislator. Now it makes sense.

Wasn't he the guy that advocated for a convicted sex offender to get off? Sorry, but this guy is no example for the community. He should be put out of a job!

I'm so glad the Star Bulletin did a story on this guy. Who would have known we have such outspoken legislators who aren't afraid to say what they think whether its politically correct or not?

We need more independent souls in office like this who aren't going to sugar coat everything and hide who they are just to get elected.

I think if it wasn't against the law for felons to run for office, I think you would see a conglomeration of undesirables in office. Voters are a strange animal. The 70% who did not vote in the previous election are upset with the qualifications of the slates so decide to stay home on election day.

All in all, we're better off with real people in government, warts and all. There is no such thing as a saint. Conservatives consistently portray themselves as saints despite obvious facts to the contrary. You can debate Bertram's effectiveness as a legislator, but at least he's not putting up a fake front.

And I thought my representative was a ditsy whack-job. This guy makes him look like a seasoned political leader (which he isn't).
