A California partnership is moving ahead with plans to develop a nearly 1,000-home subdivision in south-central Maui despite opposition from the County Department of Planning and some nearby residents.

Now that Governor Lingle and the Legislature are focusing the state on reestablishing an agriculture industry and moving away from development, this project should definitely not go through.

It's clearly more important to support growing local produce and bio-fuels to expand our economy and move away from the volatile tourism industry and reduce our populations out-of-state resource consumption, rather than add to the population and to the problem.

As will all development here in Hawaii the infrastructure: sewers, roads, multi-road access are a must in considering the go-ahead. Living in leeward Oahu, we battle every day with poorly planned roadways.

Of course they will. HSF is about anti-growth. Anything that promises "growth" that they can go after and try to stop, they will.

If so then I demand an individual EIS for every person on Maui who wasn't born in Hawaii. That EIS should take into account their contribution to the growing social problems here on Maui, especially the homeless problems caused by an overpriced real estate market partially caused by people like them moving here and buying homes in "paradise," and pricing people like myself, born here, out of the market.

If it turns out that they have had a negative impact, we should employ eminent domain laws to immediately seize their dwelling and sell it to someone born here at pre-2002 prices, or bulldoze it and turn it into parkland. I would recommend no financial renumeration, either. Onto the hard streets with the smug texans and canadians.

I second this!

Companies like this are the reason so many people are homeless. They call it "affordable", yeah right! Affordable to who, not the average family where both parents work fulltime just to barely keep their heads above water that's for sure. The foreclosure rate keeps increasing, just watch over the next 3 years how many more families will be homeless or moving out of state. Auwe

I am anti-ferry and have put my money where my mouth is. I work through the court system, journalism, and through peaceful protest. You can bet on my being involved in this matter. Enough is enough!

Maui needs Free-Ways like we have on Oahu. The Developer needs to go to Big Island Hawaii and build all he wants. Population will always increase w/new genaration of babys.Make Free-Ways and Road-ways, sewer,lights then houses.

we need more developement. good for the union leaders and staff. more money. more kickbacks to the politicians. thats a fact. need speed humps like on royal palm drive to slow down traffic.

I think it is absolutely unconscionable that 1000 or any homes be built in the Maalaea area until more inferstructure, roads, water systems, sewer systems be put in place. The rate of development on Maui is putting a giant cart in front of a very tiny horse. There MUST be more thoughtful planning before more building takes place.

Need more roads, more schools, more sewer systems, etc. before we build high priced subdivisions. Local people can't barely afford to get a so called affordable housing. Are you kidding me, only the developers make money. They no care who they step on just go build a subdivision. These guys from the mainland they do it all the time. From back in the old days till today. On every island these developers do things with no respect just to make a buck. every thing boils down to greed. The more they make the more they like.

Let them build. In 8 years, that will be beach front property, as was reported a few days ago regarding the green house effects. Multi-million dollar homes on the beach with be enclaved in a sea-wall to stop their eroding foundation.

Good luck. Affordable housing on Maui starts at 600K. Worst rat hole location for housing on Maui. Moratorium on building. The traffic jamb there now for traffic heading to the west side is already a mess. Don't hold your breath. Ain't happening anytime soon. They can't sell the homes they are building right down the road at Maui Lani. The EIS wind tunnel test is the only one they will pass. The dreams of the mainland corporations hopefully will blow right off the island.
