Sexual registry law needs to be changed - Editorials

Full story: Honolulu Star-Bulletin

Federal attempts to keep track of convicted sexual offenders have been rejected by most states, including Hawaii, and the arrest of a convicted Hawaii offender in Arizona last week might illustrate the problem.

I totally agree, but I would go further. All people, who have committed any crime, be it speeding, stealing, gang member, selling drugs, doing drugs, DUI, or anything else, to be put on a registry for all to see.
I'd love to know everyone's past as well.
Put everyone on a registry for all to see, and on the Internet. If it's good enough for one group, which studies show, have the second least recidivism rate, besides murderers, then it's good enough for everyone else.
The very laws which are suppose to protect children, which are just placebo's to make you feel safe, do neither.
If they actually worked, we'd not be having more and more crimes committed.
We need to move away from being tough on crime, and move toward being smart on crime.
Work on prevention, and not just punishment. If you just punish someone, throw them in prison, eventually they are going to get out, and in 90% or more of these cases, they do not get treatment/therapy in prison, only when they get out are they then forced to get treatment, at their expense, but, it's too late then. Why do they not get treatment in prison?
Stop the mass hysteria and moral panic, using sex offenders as societies scapegoat. No matter how many laws you pass, more crimes will occur. If you do not think so, you are living in Wonderland.
Wait a minute, I didn't say we don't need a sex offender registry. I said we need to also have a registry for the rest of the scumbags in our community.

Sexual predators, pediphiles and rapists will always harbor dark impulses towards their victims including future ones. Studies have shown that a vast majority repeat their animalistic behaviours.

The best solution is to put a bullet in their heads and save the taxpayers money and expense to house, feed, clothe and "rehabilitation" costs during incarceration if and when they are caught. By then more victims are added to their score.

Use these "saved taxes" to aid the victims instead of being wasted on these parasites!

Sgt Slaughter in Post #34: If you are going to grace society with your deep thoughts about pedophiles, why don't you at least learn how to spell it? I seriously doubt that you even know what it means.

Additionally, you said, "Studies have shown that a vast majority repeat their animalistic behaviours." That is completely wrong. In fact, studies have repeatedly shown that people who have committed sexual offenses have a very low recidivism rate, much lower than for most other crimes. That is so well known that these days anyone who makes statements such as you did is not just misinformed or mistaken, he or she is lying. In case you are as slow as you appear to be, let me be clear - anyone who makes statements such as you did is a liar.

Lastly, I'll give you a similar response that I gave earlier to a another idiot going by "TJC":

I hope and pray that your children, grandchildren, and other family members are the next "sex offenders" that join the 600,000+ listed on Registries in our once-great country.

Once your children get on a Registry I will gladly join the tyrannical masses and harass them and their families for the rest of their lives. Or, if we get the punishments that you desire, I'll help the criminal governments murder them.

That is what people who think like you deserve. When things like that happen to people like you I always enjoy it and think that karma is a wonderful thing and it couldn't have happened to a more deserving person. I pray you become a "sex offender".

Have a great day and please keep contributing to make the United States the international disgrace that it's become.

If you legalize marriage or "intereaction" to and with family members, these "sick people" could satisfy their urges at home without harming the public. Instead, you cast stones at them and shame them and make it a crime! shame on all of you! whitepower.

I've met all types of sex offenders from the family man who had a sexual relationship with his teenage daughter, to the violent attacker whose bizzare ritualistic behavior included taking a knife and cutting orifices for his use in whatever meaty part he could pin to the ground. Some of these guys are simply immature and developmentally disabled persons who got in trouble. Some are step fathers (or mothers) who crossed the line with a non blood relative family member. Many however are fixated, severely ill individuals whose fantasies revolve around children, non pubescent, underage children. These are the ones who re-offend often racking up multiple victims and their behavior is not responsive to aversion or cognitive therapies. If you can't tell, I have worked in the social mental health system. One problem we have is that we lump an 18 year old who has an affair with some High School girl at his alma mater in the same category as the child abducting rapist. We force non violent offenders who carry on illicit relationships with underage minors, such as a step father who develops an psuedo incestous relationship with his step daughter into the same box as a child murderer. For many years I have belived in two options for sex offenders, whether they be male or female,( I've met both). The first option is the "kill them all" type of punishment that folks advocate in places like this forum. The second is banishment from society for life to a colony where offenders would work and live, separated permanently from society until old age or death. There need be nothing overly comfortable about such a colony, communal housing, daily work, etc.. For a long while I too believed sex offenders should be banished, now I realize their pathology doesn't change, even if unconvicted or even if they don't actually
re-offend, their desire for the gratification, the fulfillment of the drives they have, never changes. What attracts them and satifies their need will always be just that. And, if shuch drastic laws were openly enforced, perhaps the effect would be to limit other young men and women from ever crossing that line the first time. Death is the only cure for the desires that drive a sex offender, nothing else frees them.
