Kihei blaze chars hundreds of acres
#1 Jun 2, 2009
We were awakened at 2:00 a.m.(Monday) by thick smoke in our beachfront condo in Kihei south of Ohukai Road. It kept us up coughing and wheezing until after sunrise. Our condo smelled like smoke until mid-morning. We still don't know if this smoke was from the fire or from the regular cane burning with the cyanide gas that's emitted when they burn the irrigation hoses along with the sugar cane. All we know is that it was really bad this morning, and there wasn't the usual "Black Rain" (remnants of the burnt cane that usually coats the ocean, the beach, our pool, the coral reef, our homes, cars and parking lots) caused by the cane burning, so we assumed it was from the fire. Thankfully the smoke is gone and we can breathe again. Thank you MFD!
