Wow--not a single mention of Kihei Public Charter School?

That is a very good school serving a mixed community with a combination of virtual and urban style education.

I have met the chairman of the school's board of directors, Gene Zarro, who is a very passionate advocate for kids. He said that they intended originally to have 1000 students. They have the island's only Science Tech Engineering and Math Academy (STEM).

Too bad the DOE waited SOOOOOOOO long to plan a high school in South Maui. There already is a good one--a PUBLIC Charter School. With the Obama Administration firmly behind the Public Charter School movement, it seems the DOE is a day late and a dollar short--again.

I believe that Eugene Kennedy has his facts wrong. When King Kekaulike High School opened, it only had ninth graders. The school added a class each additional year, and didn't have its first graduating class until it was open four years. I don't have the numbers at hand, but the reporter could easily check in the Star-Bulletin archives. There is no way that it opened with 1,300 students!

Also, what business does Kennedy have in commenting on the needs of Kihei students and parents? His comment of "I just can't see it" shows his own lack of vision and perspective. Would he also prefer that Hana High School students go to Maui High until they achieve 1,300 students?

I wish the citizens of Kihei good luck in getting the bureaucracy to recognize that a Kihei high school is long overdue!
