Garbage no longer collected unless in cans..

So the other day I put out my household trash as I have done in this town for the last 30+ years. Two trash cans with food related items and two black bags which contained other household refuse (nothing recyclable or hazardous in nature)these bags were a bit larger than the can opening.

When I came home from work later that afternoon all the bags on my block that were not in cans were left on the sidewalk. Thinking this was rather odd, I called the Keyport Board of health and inquired. I was informed that there was an borough ordinance that has been no the books for several years but never enforced. This ordinance prohibits garbage that is not actually in a garbage can from being collected. Additionally it limits each household to three 33 gallon size cans.
Evidently, the borough administrator decided to begin enforcement of the ordinance this week and advised the carting service to ignore bags not in cans.

While I have no issue with the # of can limit (there has to be some form of regulation) I think it's ridiculous that one can no longer have a large black contractor bag next to a garbage can and have it collected. Now you will have to attempt to jam the stupid thing in a garbage can or try to dispose of it on your own. How does useless laws like this help anything? To improve how the town looks on garbage collection day?

I heard that ordinance only pertained to the downtown area where the apartments that are above the store fronts. Most of those people were using cheap Dollar Store bags that fell apart easily or that animals could get into without a problem. Thanks for posting, I will be sure to fill my garbage cans as high as I can then.

Are there any other stupid old laws that will no be enforced? I was told when the Board of Health told the administrator to send out a notice that bags will not be picked up prior to enforcing this law - they were told the residents would "figure it out". Ugh!
The stupidity is amazing. Hey let's enforce this law the day before a holiday weekend. I had two cans full of garbage and decided to clean out the fridge since we would be away for the weekend. Needless to say at 5pm when i came home to rotting bags of food covered in flies, it was quite a shock. What if I headed down the shore from work instead of stopping home. The bags would have sat for 3 days in the heat? Way to go Keyport!!!!

Yes it is indeed town wide as I did see bags left on the curb. It would be nice if the empty cans were put back on the sidewalk and not left in the street.

I live deeper into the town and had two big black garbage bags filled with food and other garbage. Plus 3 garbage cans with white garbage bags in them and everything got picked up.

Yesterday, I drove down Broad Street in the morning hours, all garbage cans were out and some black bags sitting next to them. Upon my return through town later in the afternoon there were empty cans and black bags left all over the place. I tried to call the Borough Administrator who is supposedly the person who flipped the switch on this, but I was told she is on vacation. Nice, light the fuse then go on vacation....

the people who flipped the switch on this were the keyport business alliance aka republicans. you can call the keyport gop or kba number as they are one in the same which is highly illegal.

Word is, its taking and extra hour or more to collect the trash beacuse of the garbage can issue. It makes sense. Most bags can be trown from a good distance into the truck but every can has to be brought right to the truck, lifted and dumped and then returned. Trash on Front St which is usually done before 9am was still there at 10:30. Collecting garbage is a thankless job already but Keyport really socked it to them.

I didnt like big talk bergen but this mayor is a total jerk. I called the board of health and they told me the mayor said "people would figure it out" that garnage bags weren't going to be taken anymore. My neighbor doesnt care and has bags out on the curb for three weeks now rotting and smelling and no one will do anything about it. My street looks like garbage dump and doesnt anyone get in trouble for not mowing the lawn anymore?? Two feet of grass on house down the street. Mayor treats keyport like a dump what a great example judge. The town has never been dirtier.
