Been to the Keys numerous times and have had it with the rat race, my question is about keys disease. I know there are lots of folks who have been living in the keys for many years, however not that many folks are born and raised there. I currently live in Phoenix and nobody who lives here is from Phoenix.

My question is, why is there a negative vibe for folks who want to move down there? I am pretty sure most of the folks who moved there had keys disease at one time or another.

I read an add for an apartment that said no keys disease????

Anyway, I was just wondering.

Maybe you have a misconception of what Keys Disease is. It is meant to describe the many useless, lazy, drugged-out pseudo-hippies and/or bad alcoholics who have descended on The Keys like a plague. Being laid back and enjoying your drink is accepted, even encouraged, but there are many down here who have taken this ideal to an extreme. These types are often very irresponsible and could be unlikely to pay rent timely, hence the warning on the ad for the apartment. I get the feeling that you thought it meant no outsiders trying to co-opt a genuine Keys-type lifestyle/attitude. These are called Parrotheads.

The "Keys Disease" as described by DeeJay above is so rampant that the job postings even read: "No Keys Disease"... I spent the entire winter this year down there, and it is amazing at the amount of low life, felons, drug addicts, alcoholics and homeless there are down there... especially in Key West!! I'm sure as he stated, it is not meant to discourage productive citizens from moving to the FL Keys.

You know, Golden Girl, that's where I read it. Job ads, not one or two but a whole lot of them. And that's when I searched and ended up here and a couple of other blogs. Interesting reading...
