Hi Missouri girl,
I'm so glad everything is working out for you and you are meeting people. I vacation there about 4 times a year and will be moving there in 2 years when I am vested at my job:) Aqua is such a fun place. Everyone I have met in Keywest have been wonderful. Great fun loving personalities. They are not judgemental and love life. It is unlike anywhere else in the U.S.

How hard was it to find a place for ya'll to rent or do you live on base? We are getting transferred there in February and I feel the same way!
Most people don't transfer in during February time frame, so you should be in a place (if on base) within 30 days. Outside of base, it's almost impossible to find a place on Key West proper on short notice during Feb (peak tourist season). You'd probably have to look on Stock Island, Boca Chica, or farther out.

Well I'm retiring from the US Army after 32 years and I'm moving there. After reading your articles, I would expected a better scenario than depicted above. Good thing its all business when I get there. I heard it was the best place in the world...Maybe if good people do something about the problem, then evil will not prevail. Trust me when I tell you this! I'm good at taking out the trash!

Don't move here. I have literally been stuck here for 2 years. There is no more season, just busy weeks and then nothing. Your constantly trying to play catch up. Very hard to get a job. Most people have 2 or 3 like myself. There all bartending jobs but its not consistent. They call the people down here the working poor!
Rent is outrageous. Way overpriced and the landlords know it but there really is no other option if you want to live here. 1bd goes for $1200 no utilities and require last and security. You either live in a small place by yourself or with 4/5 in a house made for 2. Crime is getting very bad, lots of people getting jumped after work. Most city officials are corrupt and no one does anythinh about it. The newspaper even kokes about it.
Construction is on going and is awful right now. Lots of places closing due to rent being so high. I'm leaving in a month or so and can't wait. The first month is fun but not much after that. My advice would be to visit for a month and then decide. Nov-jan slow, feb-April is better but the city is trying to do away with spring break, May- July busy, aug is slower, September is awful lots of places close for the month, oct slow except for last 10 days for fantasy fest but most places overstaff so you work more hours for same $$. There are some places like sloppy joes, and a few others that are busy year round but the bartenders are old and slow and don't leave. You literally wait for someone to die and the server that's waited 10 years will get the job.
I know this is a few years past the post but wish I had seen this before moving here. There are no real beaches and the city has stopped cleaning them. The currents from the gulf and Atlantic meet below KW, and all the garbage and waste from cruise ships has been sitting in the tropical heat since May. Everywhere smells and not just the "beaches". You can't even see the sand it's just garbage and seaweed. The city decide to cut back for slower months so they just clean it for the rich snow birds for the winter. It is not even safe to swim around the island. Health advisories say to go out on a boat away crom the currents so if you dont have a boat, good luck finding a place with a pool. Check out St. Augustine and central Florida east coast.

My advice to anyone thinking of making a move to Key West is to bring lots of money and if you are sexually active, brings lots of condoms! They dont have a AIDS Memorial Bridge there for the hell of it! I'm just saying....In addition, if you are homophobic, dont go there!

You should also read some of the other post on this forum. Some of them are right on target..... It's a great place to visit but it got old quick. If you have a motorcycle, dont plan on getting into 3rd gear.....Trust me!!!!

I just moved to Dauphin Island, AL where I'm 23 minutes from Mobile. Not 3hrs at 45 miles an hour to get to a major city!!!!

Happy Hunting.....

Having been here for 2.5 years now, I can say that KW is fantastic, crime is low, the people are great, the arts/events/activities are *very* broad for such a small community, the climate is to die for, and everyone is extremely open to every lifestyle. That said, there are some caveats...

It is a subtropical island. Cost of living is relatively high (but not so high as, say, Northern VA), yet the actual pool of high-paying jobs is low. The "average joe" must work a couple different jobs or have roommates/be in a live-in relationship. Working multiple jobs is a treat if you're a people person because most jobs here are entertainment/food service/hospitality related. If you are government or military you have the best of all worlds: cheaper on-base housing, well-paying jobs with COL adjustment, etc.

The big themes of KW are: Water, Weather, Lifestyle, Arts, and Partying. Are water-based activities important to you? Think fishing, boating, etc. Is weather important to you? Is being in an area that is open to any lifestyle important to you? Are the arts important to you? Is drinking/partying important to you? The more of those you answer yes to, the more you will like KW.

Another question: do you go shopping (or window shopping) for fun? If you answer yes, you will probably have culture shock adjustment in KW. Most folks shop online here. There are no big-box stores.

Feel free to hit me back with any more questions.:)

As an addendum to my above post, I forgot to adding "biking" and a "slow speed lifestyle" as very important themes of KW.

I also forgot a very important point (this is why many folks do not KW and move after a few months): when you see the above points (water, weather, biking, etc.) note all the ones you do NOT see. Many people find they can't stand feeling "restricted" and get cabin fever. Those folks prefer wide-open land on all sides and the perks of being in or near a major city. If that's you, then you'd probably be best only living here half the year (such as during winter).

Addendum to my addendum... ;) This one is about intimate relationships and being single.
1) It's a small city (probably 30k residents by now)
2) The median age is probably in the 40s by now
3) Due to the military bases here, for every 100 females, there's about about 130 males.

Given #1, the odds of you finding love (I'm not counting one-night-stands with tourists) here are much trickier than if you were in a major metro area. Do the math, keeping in mind married couples make up almost 2/3s of the population.

Given #2, if you're not in that median age bracket, the odds of a relationship are even narrower.

Given #3, if you're a male, the odds of you finding love are even narrower.

I'm not saying love can't and doesn't occur here, but if you are single and having an active intimate scene is important to you, factor in the above as well. The small caveat to all this is that people come and go fairly frequently here, so there is a regular influx of fresh blood.

Coworker just said that my numbers regarding "married folks being 2/3s of the pop" is probably inaccurate. He's probably right.
