Best places to Jetski in Key West and the keys?

Planning on bringing out jetski to Key West in May. We were thinking about doing some general exploring around Key West and maybe a day (if it's calm enough) to make a beeline towards Marathon and back to Key West. Not sure if the Gulf or Atlantic side is a better route. Was thinking about using a Lowrance GPS with a Nauticpath for navigation (with compass and map as a backup).
Anyhow, any tips, comments, advice, and even warnings would be greatly appreciated!!

Are you aware Marathon is 50 miles one way? That's an awefully long jet-ski ride.
You can't take the Gulf route. Much of it is Great White Heron sanctuary and jet-skis are prohibited.

Good to know about the GWHS on the Gulf side. Was aware that Marathon was 50 mi. away. Yes, depending on the conditions (wave height) it could be a bit too far. FWIW, we're into long distance jetski-ing. We've driven our jet-ski from the Chesapeake Bay area down to N. Carolina through the intracoastal waterway several times---about a 100 mi. round trip---and thanks to our Honda F12's *great* gas mileage, we did it on one tank of gas!
Thanks for your info :)

I know it's been a long time since this thread was active but I figured maybe my experience may help somebody.
I live in Jacksonville, Florida and make regular trips to the Keys with my Sea Doo. I put in at Oceanside Marina on Stock Island (the island right before Key West). They have secure storage for your vehicle, trailer and PWC.
From there I can head back towards Key West and hit the Sand Bar or simply circumnavigate Key West and check out some of the other hot spots. I havenít tried venturing to any of the other Keys yet, I really havenít felt the need. There is plenty to do and see right in Key West.
BTW, I converted my double wide trailer to be able to carry my scooter with me along with the Sea Doo. I drop off the truck, trailer and Sea Doo at Oceanside then head back to my hotel on my scooter. That way I donít have to bother looking for parking for the truck and when I want to hit the water, I just head back to the marina on my scooter.

If anyone knows how to get past the weeds in the keys so they dont get clogged up in the intake.
Are there certain spots or just a time of the year thing?
