I am Dwight A. Pettit JR. the son of the Old World Glass maker and operater of the Big Pine Key Glass Works. My Father Dwight Sr and Mom Marianne Pettit operated and ran the Big Pine Key Glass works from 1967-1970. My wish is to find any artifactes(bottles, paperweights) and photos of my Mom and Dads old bottle shop and gallery that was attached to the front of the glass works. To include any photos of the inside of the shop and factory. I lived in the little house next door just to the right of the glass factory. Please help me in reviving this great part of the Florida Keys and Big Pine Key history. Please EMAIL any photos and information, newspaper articles, advertisements about the Big Pine Key Glass works or photos of any artifactes you have. Mr Jerry Wilkinson (Keys Historian Society) and I will be trying to do a traveling history presentation about the history of my family and the Big Pine Key Glass works during the month of June 2008. I presently have many artifacts and equipment (Blow Pipes, rods for making paperweights and molds used )during the making process of the glass factories artifacts. As of right now the first presentation will be at the Key Largo Library on 9 June 2008 @7PM. Everyone who has artifacts(PHOTOS OF ANY), newspaper clippings/articles are encouraged to help this presentation be a success. Thank you very much for your time and listening. Please EMAIL me at Pettit9119@bellsouth.net with any and all information and photos and articles if possible. Thank You. Dwight A. Pettit Jr.

I want to personally thank everyone who attended the Big Pine Key Glass Works Seminar that Mr Jerry Wilkinson and I put on at the Key largo Library on 9 June 2008. My family and I wish to say thank you for helping us relive those wonderful memories of our time at the Big Pine Key Glass Works. It is a time in my life that my family will never forget. And probably will never happen again. Please keep the history alive of our Florida Keys Heritage. Remember the Big Pine Key Glass Works was and always will be the the very first and only old world style glass house in Florida's history. And know one can ever take that away from the Florida keys. Thank you Mr Lester Cunningham again for giving my family the oppertunity to run/operate the Big Pine Key Glass with and for you from 1964-1969. Sincerely, Mr. Dwight A. Pettit Jr., Son of glass Artist Dwight A. Pettit Sr.

I have a small paper weight that I got at the Big Pine Key glass. We spent the winters at Bahia Honda SP from 66-70 and then bought 4 lots behind the big Pine Inn just beyond the home of Everett & Gina Hall where we spent the winters until '78. We built the small house on one of the lots.

Hi Marjorie, I would love to get a photo of the paperweight you have from the Big Pine Key Glass Works. I presently have almost 80+/- artifacts from the Factory and I am trying to put a book together with as many photos as possible of all the different artifacts made at the glass factory. I appreciate your help. I used to love going to Bahia Honda as a kid for many years. Hang on to that paperweight, they are getting harder to find. I have been lucky and have acquired 20 in the last six months. I figure we made about 2000 in the years we were there at the factory. But where are all of them? Always searching. Thank You and hopefully the next time I get down to the Keys to see my family we can meet up. Dwight

Hi Valerie, So glad to hear there is still more of them paperweights out there. I have been lucky enough to find about 50 on them in the last two years. some are stamped and some are not, due to the bottoms being ground and a paper label was used to signify it was made at the Big Pine Key Glass Works. Wish I could get a photo of the one the Dughter-in-law has. I am trying to compile as many artifacts and photos from the glass works as possible. I too miss living in the Keys very much, but I do have such fond memories. Have a great day, my email is: pettit9119@bellsouth.net , thanks again Dwight Jr.

My hat goes off to a Mr James (Jim) Mori from the Northern United States. He recently contacted me about a cache of Big Pine Key Glass Works Flasks that were made at the factory from 1969-1973. Jim graciously let me buy enough of them so all of my Brothers, Sister, Mom and my three children could have a set of four different models each for Christmas this year!!!!! Jim your kindness is greatly appreciated and you have touched all of our hearts deeply!!!!!! Folks I am here to tell you, those flasks (i have found about 20 different ones made) and the paperweights, ashtrays and figurines are still out, keep looking!!! Mr Jim has assured me that in the near future you will see more of these out for sale on EBAY and they will be identified as Big Pine Key Glass Works Flasks, Happy Hunting!!!! And I wish every one a very safe and happy Holiday Season!!!!! God Bless Everyone!!!! Dwight Jr

Good Morning Marjorie, Most excellent to hear you have one of the paperweights. I would love to see a photo of the paperweight. If you could send it to me. It will be added to the book I have started about the Big Pine Key Glass Works and there artifacts. I loved going to Bahia Honda as a kid. My dad tooks us to get Queen Conch Shells and driftwood which he used to draw on. And mjy cousin Phillup saw an Eeal on the beach and stuck it with the three sprong pick. Before my father could say anything to him he stuck the eel and gopt one heck of a shock!!!! Yes an electric eel!!! We all fell on the ground laughing cuase it was so funny seeing our cosuin get zapped like that!!!! Thanks you for your comment. Dwight Jr.

Most excellent!!!!!! You see I keep trying to tell everyone that there is almost 6,000 artifacts still out there from the Big Pine Key Glass Works!!! If you would. Could you please send me a photo of this paperweight both one of the top and the Base if that is not too much trouble? I am compiling a photo album of all the BPKGW artifacts I can find and hopefully in the next few years I will be putting up a web Page on the internet about the BPKGW on Big Pine Key. And I do appreciate it very much that you let me know about it. How were you able to come by this BPKGW paperweight? I always ask. I have found BPKGW paperweights as far away as Australia and England in the last year. It must of been tourist visiting the Keys during their vacation and took them back home as a souvinier. My EMAIl address is: pettit9119@bellsouth.net Thank you for your response. Dwight Jr. PS: I have to tell you that that "Home Sweet Home" BPKGW paperweight was one of the first ones made in the first year of operation at the BPKGW.

Hello Everyone, I wish to ask if anyone has a copy of the Leaflet(write Up Article) that the old Collectors Weekly Magazine put out about 15-20 years ago about all the Collectors Weekly Flasks that were made by the Big Pine Key Glass Works. I seem to of missplaced my copy. As I said before the glass artifacts from the BPKGW are still showing up from time to time on EBAY and other Antique Web Sites. So keep looking they will surface from time to time. I have been lucky again and have come across 6 new paperweights from the glass works. Also if anyone has any photo of the Pelican Plate made for the Collectors Weekly Series, that was made at the BPKGW, please send EMAIl a copy of the photo of this beautiful plate to me. The photo must be of the front and back of the plate. And thank you again and may every one have a Happy New Year. Happy Hunting!!!!!! Dwight Jr. PS: My EMAIL Address is: pettit9119@bellsouth.net
