You would think the USDA has bigger things to worry about than a bunch of six toed cats.

They're happy, some are rotund, human-friendly and have names like Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable... They're actually more a part of Key West then Ol' Papa himself. Many of us locals have 6 & 7 toed cats - they're all over the island. Yes, let them be. Now, about these 'free range chickens' causing near accidents daily as they cross our narrow old roads...

Romie, the world would be a better place if we had more Cats and less fat Rat Federal Government Officials.

Time to element the Rats!

YEAH!!!!! A HUGE WIN for the Hemingway cats!! Thank you Key West for keeping them at the Hemingway House and preserving a long standing Key West tradition. I've seen these cats once back in 1981 when I was in Key West with my first exhusband on our honeymoon trip, and they are the most beautiful, well behaved cats that you can find anywhere. They are very well taken care of by the staff and volunteers of the historic home, and from what I saw back then, they cause no problems for the neighborhood. The local Key West residents love them also! Just make sure that these cats are in a safe place when a hurricane comes around. We don't want to lose any of them!

I too agree with you about the Hemingway cats' victory - it's great that this tradition has been spared the government's ax. They are such fun to watch, as are the famed chickens - we love to see them!!! They really add a lot to the Key West experience and it wouldn't be the same without them. I can't wait to get back down there next spring!!

I think that the cats are the best part of the Hemingway house tour!

For tourists, that is. Most locals don't like them and we are the ones who have to live with them. Personally, I'm glad they are finally controlling them.

As for the cats, that's a different story. I'm glad things are working out for the good.

Since when do locals hate chickens?

It's been my lifetime experience in KW that it's the nuevo riche moving in that hate the chickens and anyting else that disturbs their sterile little lives.

I will agree with the condo-building rich trying to change my town and I take it personally when newcomers and Northerners bash the town I grew up in.

But back to the chickens......Most of us never had a problem with them. But they've reproduced to uncontrollable numbers. I don't want them totally eradicated. I just don't want dozens of them in my yard.

No hatred.Just that I have leived in enough places where everyone says they are locals yet they all want to change the way things have been for years.Im not sure how me asking you if you were a real local was an insult.I have gone to KW four of the last foru years and have watched the rich assholes price the real locals off the island. It is disgusting. They move in and want everything to fit their little narrow minded view of the world.Forgive me if you were insulted but I am tired of everything changing and usually not for the better.

Robert, here's a concept. Quit coming here and contributing to the wealth of the rich and greedy that are making all the changes. Seriously.

If tourists would boycott Key West it might help give this island the kick in the butt it needs.

Food for thought.

By coming there and staying in one of the few mom&pop motels left how do you suppose I am contributing to the rich and greedy? The rich and greedy are buying up all these small motels and knocking them down so they can build their mega mansions. If you lose the tourist, something the rich want, you will lose your island. The want to do the same thing to KW they did to Ft Lauderdale beach. They passed laws to keep out all the tourists unless you were rich like they are.It is happening all along the coastline in Florida.

Back to the chicknes. You say you want them controlled.I agree wholeheartedly with that.Problem is they want to get rid of them.sighting fears of bird flu.You know that big bad bird flu that was going to kill billions and has been shown time and again that it is nearly impossible to transmit to people.

Good things do happen. There is always someone with a distorted idea of what is right.
I saw the pussy cats before there was a charge to visit Hemingways home, and you could park anywhere on the street. Key West is not so friendly anymore. all money and spend spend. The pleace is surely being ruined, and especially by the current mayor.

The rich and greedy already own the majority of the island. Do some research on properties/businesses owned by the Spotswood's, Swift, Singh and more. Those mom & pop hotels are already owned by the corporations ..... soon to be demolished in favor of more condos and a convention center. Mega mansions? nah. Mega condos. yep. So yes every time you come here you're boosting their bank accounts.

Sadly we've already lost the island to the rich. The last hurrah will be when the gates go up at the triangle.

As far as chickens? I frankly have always enjoyed the chickens .... as well as the iguanas, cats and other creatures of interest. It's all a part of the ambiance that is going fast.
