If Avila was arrested and arrested on the basis of his tough questions to Alercon - shame on the Cuban gov't. If Alercon was serious about his wish that all Cubans could travel and compare the Cuban way with the rest of the world - believing that would bring Cubans to the realization that they have a better system - then, Mr. Alercon do it - let's see what would happen. Let the larger world in! Let the Cuban people see for themselves just as you wish for foreigners to come to Cuba and see for themselves the reality of Cuba. Viva Cuba and Cuban Soverignty!

HOW COULD MR.ALARCON BE SERIOUS IF AFTER MR Avile,THE YOUNG CUBAN STUDENT ASKED HIS QUESTIONS,HE WAS ARRESTED?

Alarcon is, by virtue of his position in the Cuban gov't, an apologist for the status quo in Cuba. His spin on the issues/questions reflects his efforts to put the best possible face on the positive aspects of the Cuban revolution and the current Marxist system of central control of all aspects of Cuban life. Like most politicians in power or seeking power, Alarcon actually believes he is right - he is an ideologue, like most Marxist and others in the Cuban gov't.- This compares, in my thinking, to the other pole of thought - that is the ideology of the far right who think in the same way - I am right/thus, you are wrong! No give and take in dialogue - compromise is evil - dilutes the "truth" and what is "right" and "moral" within the framework of one's ideology! ie: Capitialism vs. socialism.

Alarcon is playing with the truth - it is a problem to have freedom of movement in Cuba as so many would want to migrate to the larger cities thus causing a problem with the work force in the agribusiness sector. Yet, by a totalitarian system, this can be used to restrict movement for any purpose the gov't decides to restrict - which I believe is the case in Cuba!

Some Cubans are allowed to travel internationally, most are not. There has been and is a "brain-drain" from Cuba - thus to allow anyone with skills desperately needed in Cuba would be dangerous to the system and Alarcon knows this.

Freedom of Speech - this is interpreted as freedom to speak within "the box" of the Revolution. Take note of Aliva's refutation that he is against the Cuban gov't as reflected in a later news article - rather he is critizing the gov't from "within the box" and the vocabulary of the Revlution. Otherwise, it would be counter-revolutionary and a violation of Cuban law. This is a spin on the concept of freedom of speech which Alarcon accepts as valid. I do not.

It seems that Avile was not arrested but does do some back-peddling in a later news story! He, Avile, declares his support of the Cuban system and the Revolution which, by Cuban standards, makes his critisim justified. My question: What kind of "pressure" was this student under to explain his questions to Alarcon to the world press? Was it of his own volition? Was he threatened with jail time if he did not do so? I hope he chose to do so of his own free will.

You are most welcome, my friend! Just so you will have some understanding of my criticism of my own gov't and the Bush administration's policies of wire taps, invasion of privacy, etc. under the smokescreen of fighting terrorism - I see what can and does happen when a seeming "well meaning law" falls into the hands of less honorable persons in high places - including my country. Constant vigilance is the price of keeping freedoms even in our Republic.

GEORGE THANKYOU FOR AN OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS. It's refreshing! However, regardless of Cuba's needs as a nation, people are more important. Individuals are more important. They are not cattle or chess pieces to be moved here or there because they are needed here or there. Incentives most be provided to attract people. Not restrict their freedoms and force them to do what the govt needs. This is what the corrupt govt of Cuba needs to learn! Grant freedom to it's citizens and provide incentives to encourage them to do what is needed. They also need economic freedom & economic equality with the rest of the world!

I agree, despite our differences, I've become
fond of both CG & OM. We don't see eye to eye, if anything, just the opposite. some of the name calling was for fun, some was to make them reconsider, I felt that they were tactless with a people that are displaced from their birthland, due to a ruthless dictatorship. But, YES, they seem to be genuine good people that care, even if they don't seem to understand, and seem to lack empathy.
They definetely are not trolls like foolAno &G'sW.
When GC called a truce, I changed my ways, but he kept ribbing me. Well, maybe I deserved it. After all I mortified those guys to no end.
All I ask from them is a little tact. If they can do that, I am willing to stop the immature nonsense towards them, despite our difference in opinion. So....YES I agree, and I am glad you made the suggestion.

In witch hands are the control of the MASMEDIA on the world?
This incident on Cuba was twisted by some media with the intention to create the atmospher that in Cuba exist a generational war, that in Cuba isnt possible to express the opinion of every body freely, that the politicians impost by force their power to the people and that they never listen or participate hand by hand with the people discusing and finding the solutions to the problems odf the society.
This is not nothing new, the revolutionary gov alway has been using this formula for ever, that the low and decision must come out from the people organized on dif locals and regionals counsels and associations.
Just, empty brain people can believe on this falsity created by the masmedia.
