Hello to any possible new neighbors!

Hubby and I are thinking seriously about retiring to Kewanee. We are in contact with a Realtor to buy a house and a trip is planned in early Nov. I am disabled and will not be able to make the trip.

But Oops...I have been reading the forum here and are getting mixed responses on whether it would be a good place to retire.

I was born and lived most of my life in Chicago but now live in the NW suburbs we moved to get away from the Big bad city to the East. Not many places are as unfriendly to live as it.

Please tell me Kewanee is not as corrupt or as dangerous to live. Am I wasting my time searching for a house in Kewanee? I am a tad concerned now.

We do not have a lot of cash so it will be a one shot deal we can't afford to make a mistake....

Please tell me what are the areas to avoid and anything else I should know before making a decision. Thanks I appreciate any input!

Worst place in Kewanee is topix....we have a community of really great people its mostly trash here on topix and if you count the posters they make up a very small percent of our community. Like anywhere its all in the company you keep. Check out other Kewanee sites on the internet to get to know how beautiful Kewanee is. We have no problems living here at all. Not afraid to be out and about even at night on our walks.

princeton is a much, much better area, and you'd be a little closer to you friends/family in the burbs

I will agree, Princeton or Geneseo are better cities....but Kewanee isn't all bad. If buying a house in kewanee I would suggest avoiding the North East side of town...other then that my experience has been most are decent neighborhoods. Sure - there are bad seeds everywhere, but the crime rate is fairly low. This town does seem to have a bit of a drug problem, but as long as you stay away from those kind of people you won't have any issues. I wish you the best of luck and happy retirement!

Kewanee has a lot of positive attributes. Don't let the toxic topix represent the town. Lots of cultural events and shopping within 1 hour drive in Peoria, quad cities, Galesburg. Kewanee has a lot going for it. Cost of living here is very reasonable and the problems are pretty isolated to their own areas. Nice houses and neighborhoods are still here and predominate.

Your retiring to Ktown and your on Topix wanting wanting to find out about the community ??? Seems a little hard to believe, but what the hell... You should have no problem finding a nice house for cheap. Most of the criminal activity is committed by teens that are bored... Alot of the meth heads are locked up but there the up-coming geekers that will eventually be sent away. Since you are retiring, you will not need a job, thats good, because there are none... Walmart is a very entertaining place to hang out at...unless you go to the bars, if so, drink before you go, so you can stomach the "poor" slobbering drunks or the "rich" slobbering drunks, both are very entertaining! You will probably do most of your shopping out of town, since we have a very poor selection of "everything" here... You decide, its a gamble anywhere you go !!!!

i know you could find worse places than kewanee.has most things needed in one form or another.we have our problems but who does'nt.a walgreens, cvs and walmart drug stores.a movie theater,a fine libraey,a number of churchs.as you can see,i'm not much on spelling but i try.from one end of town to other at most is three miles or less.two furniture stores.for better or worse a number of places to eat out.a walmart,a menards home supply store an a farm king store.a new hospital.a number of civic an social clubs.Peoria,Galesburg and Moline or less than 60 miles. i think we have many things you require.a new railroad depot or waiting station, under construction.amtrak stops chicago bound twice daily, both ways.good hunting and good luck in your retirement.just remember trash is easy to spot, have to look a little closer to see past it.

Kewanee has ALOT to offer if you do NOT need a job. Close driving to peoria /quad cities AND princeton areas . Just be carefull on house location .

The hospital and doctors here suck. You'll wait an hour to take a helicopter flight to either Peoria or the Quad Cities. Ya might as well retire to a place that isn't as dead as the both of you soon will be. And somewhere closer to Interstate 80. The roads are unsafe in the snowdrifts. 80 is always safer than the state roads which you will have to endure to get to 80. Princeton and Geneseo is right on 80. So is Geneseo. Princeton is also a stop on the Amtrak as Kewanee is, but it will be cheaper to ride Amtrak to the burbs and city from Princeton rather than Kewanee.

You'll be living your final years in a town of rural white trash.

This town is not that bad. Pick a doctor you like. Mine don't make me wait more then 5 min to see the doc. Any hospital that doesn't have a chopper on hand to life flight you, is going to have a wait. All roads get bad when the snow drifts, that's why sections of 80 are sometimes closed. I doesn't mater where you live in Illinois the winter is aweful. This town is not dead and not full of white trash. It has its problems just like any community but it also has a lot of good. The parks are lovely. And the people are usually very friendly around town.

Think about their age, folks! If they can't be at a hospital that can fully treat them in 15 minutes, they are practically goners! You think old people wanna die in-flight to a REAL hospital with REAL doctors? Put yourselves in THEIR shoes. Remember: you're probably talking to someone who pees and craps their pants.

More ad homs, but no substantive response to what should be very real concerns to any elderly people thinking of retiring to Kewanee from the Chicago or the suburbs.
