I have been warning everyone that we are experiencing an rather large bloom of the plankton Alexandrium, which is the one that causes PSP. We had a case last week here in Ketchikan where someone from the public ate clams from an untested beach and got sick. For the past two months the Shellfish Growers Cooperative has been sampling clams on local Geoduck clam farms and have watched as the PSP levels have steadily risen. We have also watched the plankton at the Alaska Shellfish Nursery. The State does not monitor or test any beaches here in lower southeast Alaska, testing is the only way to be certain whether PSP is present and at what levels, do not eat clams that have not come from tested beaches. It will be several weeks before this bloom begins to subside.
