The University of Virginia's Beta Bridge has been a standard for support and encouragement for generations, as well-wishers regularly repaint their messages. Full Story

How can you attach the opinions of one person to that of an entire organization?! unless the organization as whole expressed disapproval of your relationship with said female, don't put that on their name. Im sure there were people on both ends of the spectrum both inside and outside of the organization.
Also, you may have a problem with organizations who "segregate" themselves, but those orgs have proven to be integral when it comes to speaking up for those who often do not have a voice, providing support for those who really need it, and serving as a space where individuals of similar backgrounds, cultures, interests, and upbringings can come together periodically. The African American enrollment rate at UVa is currently 6.5%, down from almost 13% in the 1990s, and black have been admitted for only a little over 50 years now. As the statement said, it is no secret that there has been a long history of racial tension at the university, and for you to suggest that there is no need for a BSA, suggests that you are perpetuating this "post-racial" ideology that seems to be prevalent at UVa. Furthermore, BSA does not "segregate" themselves from anyone, the same way that members of Student Council do not segregate themselves from others. For many students, it is an extra curricular club for which they spend 1-2 hours/week associated with. Otherwise, I would imagine that they spend the rest of their time in the classroom, at home, in office hours...just like everyone else... Do members of traditionally white sororities and fraternities not "segregate" themselves? Everyone tends to flock to and stay with their own kind, INCLUDING yourself. It's human nature. Don't rag on them for doing it.

Right, now lets try and do the right thing and move forward since it is the 21st Century. If people were really worried about ending racism they would not need or want to belong to groups that are separate from others based on the color of their skin. Sadly these groups do nothing to foster better relations between the races. I have to give my ex-GF props for at least trying to make a difference by becoming a member of a predominantly white sorority and that was in the late 80's/early 1990's.

Hey NBC once again.... how about doing a story on how UVa Parking and Transportation is once again screwing over UVa employees by raising parking! Hell I like to know why I have to pay where I work. Over 500 bucks! Some are paying over $700! Go interview some of the UVa employees! We get a raise just to return it back?

How many white only colleges does the US have? When people set themselves apart they can't cry too much about the attitudes their actions create.

Hey free from government genius. Pave your own roads, don't accept unemployment when you are laid off in the winter for construction, test your own medicine, food, protect yourself in wars, don't call 911, allow your kids to attend public schools get the point? The Tea fools are the problem.

What was even written on the bridge to begin with? What was the vulgar image?

All this reaction, condemnation, solidarity and proclamations of "progression" and "black power" and we don't even know what initially triggered it....

Doesn't that strike anybody as odd?

What a bunch of nut cases on this board. Are you all under the impression that racism is somehow behind us? That every reported racist act is really just some kind of PR stunt meant to make something out of nothing? Some exercise in overbearing PC activity?

What the h-e-double toothpicks is wrong you people?

If this incident is brought up during the Human Rights Commission vote later this month as justification for the need for such an entity with "enforcement powers" then some alarm bells should sound.

We still don't even know what was written on the bridge???

Did you read the Dean of Students response? There's a little minor scandal in it if anyone is paying attention. I'll quote from it, "Although we must remain mindful that SOME ugly or repugnant speech may be constitutionally protected and thus outside our ability to sanction, that does not preclude us from making a firm statement of condemnation in response." Just wondering: If SOME ugly and repugnant speech is outside their ability to sanction then what speech is within their ability to sanction?

I still say its agitprop from a prog or, most likely, some kid looking to stir things up.

What about the incident back in February where a tribute to Casey Schulman was defaced while mentioning her race? I don't recall any condemnation or declarations of solidarity for that?

Or the incident a couple years ago where a black student accused two UVA Officers of using excessive force on him and profiling only to admit later that he made it all up.
Or the incident involving the girl who's name began with an L. People didn't and still don't believe she was assaulted. In the end she got what she wanted and a new position was created to boot.
Racism is alive and well in the Commonwealth. Those who make up these stories should be punished for all to see.

I don't pay for parking where I work. However, I totally agree. Why make money for someone, then turn around and pay it back to them for parking? I guess you are helping to pay for some of those new buildings on campus or the salaries of the sabbatical taking faculty.

Fine you say its "agitprop" or something akin to it. I say that ethnic intolerance has been on the rise in the US and this thread and probably this incident are places where you can see it clearly.

And if you want to connect the condemnation of it to "Leftism" and call "Leftism" diseased, I'll need to to say a lot more about what you mean by "Leftism" - because the growth of ethnic intolerance, to me, are signs of a "Rightist" led path creeping toward Fascism.
