This is just another example of the reckless use of firearms by the local rednecks of Kerr County. It is time to clamp down on these hicks with guns by adopting agressive gun control legislation.

Were you there when the guy shot the bear?

He should carry pepper spray, and use it first. He does not need a gun.

Yeah well the chances of running into a bear around here are slim. There are bears here but they are few a far between. I doubt many people in this area truly expect to run into a bear. You are making claims about this guy as if you were there and saw the whole thing. It if completely unreasonable for someone to carry pepper spray with them when faced with a 6-7 foot killing machine. Next when the Game Warden finishes his investigation and reports no foul play, you will claim the Game Warden is corrupt.

Rup- your mind reading skills are weak. "faced with a 6-7 foot killing machine".. give me a break. the bear was 100- 140 lbs. The killer claimed he needed a gun to protect himself. I ask from what? Take away the gun, give the guy some pepper spray. The real problem here is the proliferation of guns ownership in Texas. This is another example. One can understand how all the Bears in this part of Texas were killed...too many trigger happy hicks.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you can never have too many guns. Just not enough ammo.

According to the news paper the bear was 5 to 6 feet tall and around 140 to 160lbs. You are telling me that if you were faced with a 140-160lb bear you would rely on pepper spray, and just hope that it works? A bear that size is going to be more powerful than a man the same size. I'm not saying the guy who shot it was right or wrong. The point I'm trying to make is you were not there and you don't know anything about the man who shot the bear. Yet you claim the man is a hick redneck who used a firearm in a reckless manner. Are you assuming he is a white hick redneck because he was at the YO ranch? If so that would be stereotyping, which would make you a hypocrite (based on your previous ramblings regarding law enforcement stereotyping of ethnic/race driven traffic stops). Do you know the race or ethnicity of this man? Do you know this man personally? If you found out this man was black or Hispanic, would you still have questioned his actions?

Rednecks come in all colors my friend. How do you read race into this? This is story about the reckless use of firearms, the distruction of a rare animal, and the feeling that the man can not walk in the woods without a gun. It is a poster story for gun control, and gun confiscation.

Lana Hollingsworth died from her injuries on 7/25/11 after being attacked 4 weeks prior by a black bear near an Arizona country club. In June 2011 Bernice Adolph was attacked an killed by multiple black bears who then fed on her remains. It seems to me that black bears are capable of attacking humans and don't just "run away".

I read in yesterdays Daily Times that a woman had shot a man with a hand gun and received probation. Last week a driver pulled out a pistol in a road rage incident. I have never read or heard about anyone using a gun in Kerr County for legitimate self defense over the last five years. The bear is just the latest victim of a culture based upon fear and "macho". Many of the local gun owners are not capable of the judgment necessary to posses firearms. Confiscation is the only answer. The weapons can be replace by non lethal weapons, like pepper spray and stun weapons. As a community, we cannot allow these gun toting hicks to keep on threatening our fellow citizens and wildlife. Gun control is not enough. Gun confiscation is the only remedy. If the citizens refuse to turn in the guns, the we must come into their houses and take the guns away. This should be the law and it will be the law.

Ha, take the guns away? The people would not stand for that and the federal government would never dare. The constitution is clear in that and it has been ruled on many times, not gonna happen. This is still the only place you can voice your ridiculous opinion.

No country would dare invade the United states mainland. Not only would they be met by US military forces, but they would be met by approximately 50-100 million armed private citizens. We may not have a million man army but we would definitely quickly develop a multimillion man militia.

Vic, you have been watching too much TV... untrained civilians are no match for a trained military force. Do youself a favor and turn in your weapon.

BJ I have seen the "trained" military from other countries, I think a Texas boy with a rifle would fare pretty well.

We (the United States) utilized militia men to help win our independence against one of the most powerful countries of its time (The British). Gosh, haven't you ever seen the patriot starring Mel Gibson? Heck only about a million or so of those untrained citizen's bullets would have to find there mark. If that were to happen I think we would topple any invasion force. I think a 1 in 50-100 odds are pretty good.

God, Country, Constitution, Family, Neighbors, Land, Arsenal. What's the chance of islam getting any of it? Say my name fool.
On this 224th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution, and with the observance of Constitution Day, Congressman Allen West (FL-22) released this statement:

"On this day, 224 years ago, our country's founders signed the document that would lay the foundation for the greatest nation the world has ever seen. With three simple words,'We the People,' the founders assured liberty and freedom for its citizens, making it law that the power would always be with the people, not the politicians.

The Constitution was written for the 'people' and by the 'people,' and it is the 'people' who have and will continue to keep the Constitution alive. At no greater time in a generation, have so many Americans from all walks of life banded together to stand up for the principles of the Constitution, than there are today. Those core principles of limited federal government, individual freedoms, personal responsibility, and free markets define what makes America great. The notion that our Constitution is a living, breathing document that can be altered depending on the 'feeling' or 'opinion' of the day is wrong, and will ultimately lead to this country's demise, if not defended.

Gun control is necessary in Texas. Texans use guns wrecklessly. The laws are slowly being changred. Be a good American and turn your gun into a fedsral agency. They will destroy it for you.
