Wonder what happened to the "heiress" who I assume owned this property? Sounded like she was a real loser from the story I read about her in the Citizen sometime ago. She looked like she'd been rode hard and put up wet!

She seemed to have made a few bad business decisions but couldn't carry on the maintenance and upkeep. Look at a lot of the old "manors" - Biltmore, Belle Mead, etc - they couldn't afford to be private homes anymore.

Does GDR own all of Asheville yet?

Go to Goggle and type in Global Development Resources and see what they have planned for Asheville.

...And the City Council just keeps on fiddling in a clueless haze.

The article about the Thoms Estate was complementary about the Thoms family but I have to wonder how much health insurance the Thoms payed on the workers that made them rich.
I am not a socialist but I believe that this country would not be in the mess it is in concerning health and education if the few that got very rich from cheap labor.

Biltmore is a private home, it is owned by W.A.V. Cecile George Vanderbilts grandson.

ahh, just what I was wondering. I know it is considered a private home, but where do they live there? There are so many rooms, they have to live somewhere in there, right?

There are additional buildings both on the property and off where the families live: no one has lived in the house since the 50's, and he was a "caretaker."

When just looking at the empty development,it doesn't seem AT ALL big enough to fit even a dozen homes. I would think that the people who could have afforded to build there, would not find Thoms a very attractive place to sink a couple of million into. There are still vacant lots in Biltmore Forest after all. I think the "developer" way overestimated the appeal of this property, but at least it hasn't scalped a whole mountain like Reynold's Mtn, Grove Park Cove and Bartram's Walk. These were all cases of greedy city council, planning and development or whoever was responsible for approving on landslide areas.
