With the loss of Plastech, will Kenton officials start working dilligently to find another company that will come to the area? Will a spec building be built to lure business into Kenton? Or will Kenton fade away like other towns have in the past? What will happen if Goodyear closes? Many Kentonians work at the Union City plant and have spoke of it closing within the next 2-3 years. What will this part of West Tennessee do for a job?

Not to mention, the more frequent signs that the new Highway is gonna be bypassing Kenton all together connecting to Union City. Which is going to severely cut down on the traffic coming through town. That will be nice for noise but that also will limit the money being spent in town by people passing through Kenton. They have already began moving the electric poles way back from the road and more and more i see surveyors and tree/road crews working preparing to widen the highway to Union City.

I live in kenton and owned a business in dyer at one time, after seeing what the bypass did to dyer and rutherford i would think the best thing for the town would be to put that highway straight through in kenton. Just like they did in greenfield, look what it did there. If not kenton will be a ghost town just as soon as that highway goes around.

Here is my serious advice and predictions. One way or another, Kenton will drastically change in the next 10 years. The highway could go around, Goodyear close, or slow economy in general. The long term outlook is that the farmland will be owned by a few families with fewer and fewer businesses in town. Factories are not going to open up in this economy for the forseeable future. If you are retired and have a pile of money, Kenton will be a great place to live. It will be really quiet. If you are younger, get the heck out. Move to Memphis or another state. There is no future in Kenton if you are not currently in the farming business. That's just the way it is. Kenton will get smaller and smaller. The movers and shakers brought this to Kenton. Trying to protect and isolate the town from outside influences starting in the 1970's have come home to roost in there being almost no business nowadays in Kenton and the standard of living reflects this agenda. Standards will continue to go downward towards poverty.

1 Why should Kenton be like Greenfield? Why did it not go through Rutherford and Dyer too? You know it just goes to show Greenfield and the former Governor Mcwhatever (his name is) being from Dresden made a difference, where is the politics of Kenton. That is the future, elect a governor. |
