I am looking to switch internet providers here pretty soon, since Windstream is a joke. But I am curious what ISPs you guys would recommend for someone who has both a laptop and a desktop.

i had windstrem forever and last summer i just had enough our interet was going between 100-150 times a day, we switched to the local databit, and have had ZERO problemse since July. When you call you speak to a person, no automated crap, he comes out immediately if you need help with anything, friendly, I suggest it.

How much does it normally cost to go with Databit? And what is the kind of speed you're getting? If you're not sure, use speedtest.net . I'm a bit strapped for cash lately, and I'm looking to get away from the tv/phone/internet bundle since it's a money vampire I no longer want or need.

I was just looking into them. My download speed is 3.07mbps and 0.65mbps upload. It's pathetic. Switching to that would be a dramatic change, that's for certain.

Roadrunner has about four different plans, from real slow to very very fast. The one I would suggest for you costs $49.95/mo. and has download speed of about 15mbps and upload of about 1mbps. I pay an extra $10/mo. for the faster speeds I mentioned above. Stay away from DSL, bad choice at any lower cost.

If you think Windstream is bad in town, you should see it outside of town. I'd dump them in a second if I had any other choice. The thing is that I've had them for 3 years and they've gotten worse instead of better. It's just a constant fluctuation of speeds.

Windstream is my provider, and even though I pay my bill each month, they shut my phone off three days before the due date, then the live chat person said I had to call to get it restored! I too am shopping since my internet works when it wants too, and I have to pay before the due date!

Wild Blue can't do online gaming just like Hughes Net or I would've already switched.

And I do a lot of online gaming. Which is why I don't bother with Hughes Net or Wild Blue

That's odd, I had nothing but problems with Roadrunner. Windstream has been great for me.

sounds like a Windstream employee posting to make Windstream sound good. Windstream is a DSL format ISP, the worst kind of ISP you can possibly purchase, very very very slow speeds and it gets worse the farther away you are from the source. Check out customer reviews of Windstream DSL service at this URL- http://www.dslreports.com/comments/1596

The above statement is not true as far as Roadruner service is concerned. The important thing to remember is you get what you pay for and any download speed under 15mbps is going to be terrible service. DSL is the slowest of all services and is a terrible rip-off of the poor consumer who thinks they are saving money paying for 3mbps download speeds. The DSL service would be almost laughable if they were not ripping off so many poor families. The whole DSL scam is based on greed.

DSL is pretty pathetic. Which is why I'm hoping to get away from it as soon as I can. The only problem is convincing the rest of the family that we should ditch this terrible bundle service. Tried to say Time Warner would be the best bet around here, but they don't want that because they apparently like to jack up rates every year or so. Which is debatable since we would get faster internet speeds, better TV channels, and no home phone for telemarketers to pester us with.

Unfortunately he's right. Time Warner has load-balancing software that does exactly that.

The issue with the satellite providers isn't speed, it's ping time. That's what's critical in gaming. The physical distance of the satellite makes ping rates around 500. Anything over 100 will result in a bad experience.
