Northwood is a good school with a geat staff. How sad we live in a society that lunatics prey on helpless children in schools, or anywhere for that matter. I say train & arm any school official who's willing. They should have the right to protect themselves & the children they've been entrusted with. The lunatics aren't going to stop trying to outdo each other. We need a long term solution.

Most people think it would never happen here. This community has changed so much over the years. I went to northwood when it was new and beautiful. Always open and teachers would send you home if you needed to get something. No worries about things like today. What a shame that people have to live in fear. I heard that a student brought in a gun.

i think they should have the doors that only open from the inside while school is in process or have a buzzer at the doors like in the senior citizen buildings..it would def make our schools safer.

Our school (not in Kenton) is always locked and guest have to be buzzed in by a video camera door bell. It helps keep the staff and students safe. No outside doors are left unlocked so anyone can enter whenever they wish!

The idea of the school being locked sounds good, but also horrible at the same time. As a parent I feel I have the right to drop in on my child's school at any given time. With the doors locked, buzzers, etc would give the school a chance to cover any wrong doings going on in that moment.

Kenton has some great teachers, but like everywhere else evil teachers can be here also.

In order to protect the kids, schools need to be on lock down when school is in session. They also need armed gaurds in the building. I have worked in security for seveal years. It is entirely possible to have armed gaurds dessed in business suits walking the hallways. Its not like they would be navy seals in full combat gear. They could station one at the front door to screen visitors. You give the gaurd your name and your kids name, they check it on a computer. If it matches they push a button to unlock the door and your in. All it takes is money.

It is a public school paid for by the public. Any tax payer has the right to go to that building at any time unannounced. To restrict access is a violation of taxpayers rights. If you want to restrict access then go to private pay. Also restricting access will lead to teachers and school officials who will forget that they are accountable to the public.

A public school is just that -public. But a visitor needs to have a valid reason to visit. If a visitor has a valid reason to be there then its no problem. If someone wants a tour then they need to call ahead and schedule it.

Sorry. Any citizen can go there any time. Inappropriate behavior and action by citizens while on the school property will be delt with severely. Also a citizen must show full respect for the institution while there. You can put up metal detector and search them. You can require them to make an appointment to see a teacher who is with a class. You can require them to return at a different time. You can have them arrested for soliciting. You have a duty to prohibit their contact with students. You cannot lock them out or require that they call ahead. They must be received during school hours unless school is in a lockdown.

To Just Me- I understand your opinion... As a parent of a child that goes to a school that is locked I have never felt my rights have been taken away. The school does not deny you acces, it just allows for visitors to be monitored (office can visually check) when they enter the building. This way the school knows who is in the building and they are allowed in by the front door/office area. I feel very safe knowing my child's school takes great pride and care in knowing who is in the same building that my child is in. The odds of teacher cover up or evil teachers locking you out of the building, well the odds are probably slim to non? The sad thing is though if a person wants into a school, they are probably going to get in. The goal is though to make it not so easy for someone to just walk in any door they want and do as they please...

On a side note... I know everyone on this forum has the same common goal as to how to keep our kids safe and how do it with the most secure, cost effect and legal way:)I am not debating or looking for an argument but wanting to share how having a locked school has impacted the safety of my family. I continue to pray at night our schools, staff, and students stay safe.

The school should ne monitored with cameras. Each classroom halls and outside entrances. This way the entire system would be more secure. The cameras could be linked to the internet so public could at any time look at what grade 5 was doing. Parents could check in on their children any time. If children knew this the discipline problems wood end. Neighborhood crime areas in cities now have cameras and it helps. It not only would help security but it would protect teachers from the false accusations made by students.

Sorry but if Kenton would feel the need for armed guards, I would feel the need to no longer allow my child in public schools. if Kenton is so bad we need armed guards over 1 issue, I can and will move from here.

If you think tragedy will never happen here or violence will never happen to you or your family you are dangerously naive. There is nothing that says it will but then nothing says it wont either. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
