Teen drowns in Housatonic River

A 15-year-old boy died Sunday in the Housatonic River north of the Bulls Bridge power plant on the Kent-New Milford line.

language barrier and age, first of all work place should be diverse, language should not have been a prob.for the caller in trouble nor should the age have mattered the job was to get there.there are or should have been a translator there.

Condolences to the family. What a tragedy. Please don't attack me for this, but my first thought was that situations like these are exactly why a successful nation has unity of language. How can public services properly serve the citizens if they cannot communicate. I hate to think this boy might have been saved but for a language barrier...

I have to say that although Rex Steele is harsh in his words, he's correct. This IS America...where English is the primary language. I understand this is a tragedy that happened, and I send condolences to the family, yet English should be learned properly when moving to America. I personally can't stand when you make a phone call to a company and you have to push 1 for English or 2 for Spanish. What's that all about??? We are a 1 language country, so people should learn it or deal with the consequences of not knowing it...as did this unfortunate family.

W T F do you mean by "What's that about"? When you visit other big nations, they too have a variety of languages available when providing customer support... And how IGNORANT of you not think the victim could be in this country on Vacation. Do you think that everyone that vacations in "your" country speaks English?? Have you ever traveled abroad?? Where do animals like you come from?

Can I call you Mr/Ms. Idiot in an effort to avoid calling you what I really think you should be called... The US is a melting pot, spanish, german, asian, african, british, man I can go on and on. The public service units in this country should be trained and/or equipped w/translators. The court system has them so what's the issue.

Everyone in THIS country (not MY country I don't own it) should speak English because that IS the language we speak. That's the language our founding fathers spoke, and that's the language that MOST everyone knows. If people come over here and they don't know the language but move here, then it's their own fault. If they are visiting, then it may be an issue, but it's no fault of our country...do you even know how many languages are out there?!? What, do you want our police, EMT and so forth to learn several languages 'just in case' some one from a foreign country is visiting?? Give me a break. Get real. I'm just so sick of people coming here and thinking this country is a free for all. It DOES have a cornerstone...a CHRISTIAN foundation and it's being destroyed by people thinking they can come here and do as they please! Grow up.

I did not read in the article that they were here on vacation.
I read that he was swimming and drowned and there was a language "barrier".

The people that come here and learn the language , I have no problem with....
The problem is with the dumba** "immigrants" that come here and still want to speak there "home" language.
We speak ENGLISH here, not mexican or spanish or german , or any other language.
You can ask any of the people that come here and speak our language and they will tell you..
I came here for a dream and that dream means I learn English so I did.
They actually hate people who come here and refuse to learn English.
The "pot" is overflowing and it is time to turn the stove off!

When did English become the official language of the United States? It never did. We have no official language in this country or state. People have the freedom to speak whatever language they choose.

YES anyone is welcome to speak ANY Language they want.... but perhaps it would have prudent if some one in this Family knew English? THey figured out how to get to Gaylordsville via ENGLISH road signs... Is it realistic to have a small local VOLUNTEER Fire Dept have an inturpreter in staff for every language? People need to be RESPONSIBLE and not expect that the "Goverment" will do everything for them that they are too lazy to do for themselves.
