seriously, this is getting ridiculous. it was her fault, as anyone there will tell you, as well as store video footage will prove. you see, they got these awesome little things hanging from the ceiling called cameras. its an awesome thing they do, they actually record things that are happening so that you can go back later and review them. maybe if heather had known this she wouldnt have acted like a dang fool in the store and gotten herself in all this trouble that shes trying to get out of by playing the race card. maybe she will think twice next time she swings at a cop.

Thanks for posting this. I usually don't look at references to outside links, but I'm glad I saw this. Gave me a much better understanding of what happened and of the players involved. Hester May, this young woman's mother, always seemed to be a down to earth person, from what I recall. Very nice and good natured. For the most part, the people interviewed seemed calm and credible and determined. I'll be very interested to know what happens.

Sokoloff probably should have either talked on camera or, better still, not talked at all. He didn't really do himself any favors with that interview to my mind.

Is this case going to be heard in Dunklin County, or has it been removed to another place, like Cape Girardeau or Popular Bluff or even St. Louis county?

The story doesn't seem balanced and the newspaper seems to be biased toward the arrested woman and her family's version of events.

Since when have you been treated fairly while getting arrested anyway. There taking your butt to jail, remember, why should they have to be nice about it.

Here is another link of an article regarding this matter. Be sure to read the prosecuting attorney's response.

I am deeply saddened by this situation. This young girl should have made a better choice that’s for sure. I believe her attitude and her reaction to the situation was totally unacceptable. There is no excuse for disobeying an officer or swinging at/hitting or kicking an officer.

This young lady had a bright future. Not enough of our young people are in college much less heading to med school. Especially our African American youth. I think something could have been worked out. It’s obvious a college student is going to be greatly hurt by any charges whether they be misdemeanor or felony. Not many young African American women from our area receive the opportunities that this girl has. I hate to see her future to turn out this way.

This young lady and our community would have been better served by some good old fashioned common sense. I believe on all parts. The girl’s, the officer’s and the prosecutor’s. I would have been happy if they let her go with no charges but she was then required to spend all her College breaks and summers lecturing to underprivileged children in our community on how one bad decision can rip away all your dreams and your future.

If this common sense approach been applied, we would not have had civil rights marches in our streets, bad press for our city, and we would have saved some tax payers bucks on this trial. This girl and perhaps countless other children would have a bright future. Most importantly, lessons would have been learned by all.

Point 1= We have lived here in the Bootheel of Mo. for a while, and whites have married blacks for a long time.

Point 2= You wouldn't have cut in my line, as I unless I had 1 or 2 items, would have let you.

Point 3= her behavior was not one of a University student, but of something other learned.

Point 4= Not much else to point out, she was in the wrong, and thats all.

KPD we stand with you!

I agree with much of what you've said here. The situation could have been handled better on all sides and certainly shouldn't have reached the point it's at now. I get the sense folks on both sides of the equation became very stubborn and dug in on their positions. Now Sokoloff's getting bad publicity and, if he's not lucky, may end up being subjected to disciplinary action, and this young woman has had a major curve thrown into her plans. She can probably pick things back up at some point, but the path won't be as smooth as it should have been without this incident.

If there's video footage of what happened in the store and in the parking lot, I'm surprised it hasn't been released. Part of me wonders whether the footage is as much of a slam-dunk for police as some would have us believe. If it were, I'd think Sokoloff would have managed to have it released or leaked to media, unless there's some news blackout order. And that can't be the case, or Sokoloff and the family wouldn't be talking to media.

My guts says there's more to this story than we're hearing. I had one inclination when I first read about the story on Topix, but now my inclination has shifted after seeing that news clip. Again, I'll be interested to see how it all turns out.

This racial prejudice has to stop, we are all brothers and sisters in the eyes of the lord. We need to put aside our petty differences and stand together against racism. This cannot be allowed to go on any longer. We cannot sit idely by while our own get mistreated and abused by those in power.
You are forgetting that this is Kennett that is being discussed here. Be best if some rich people get together, buy the entire town, bulldoze and plow the place under, then grow soybeans where Kennett is now situated. The entire city of Kennett sucks big time!

<quoted text>It's comments like this that foster the perceived or in the case of Mr. Deere proven racism directed against other races. Even wnat might be perceived as looking down upon another group is real to them and should be avoided. I would get angry with any group downgrading my caucasian race and even with my limited education and knowledge I can understand why that anger would be equally bothersome to some other race for those same reasons. Now folks you know exactely what kind of lover i'll be called and if that also includes every race in the world then i'll gladly agree.
mr deere only sayin things like he sayin to git on the good side of his longed for and pined over lover boy from az and actaly duznt mean a word of what he sayin in this site. mr deere is jest a luv sick old fat man that refuses to come out of the closet but still wants a piece of lover boy from az.

Look folks, I don’t thinks this is all about racism. I think it has a lot to do with a young generation feeling self entitled. In stead of standing in line and waiting their turn like everyone else. They felt entitled to cheat the system (aka standing in line) and take the fastest spot in line even if that meant cutting in front of others.

When I go to Walmart my husband we stand together in the same line. He doesn’t stand in one line, while I’m in another. We don’t hold the place in two lines waiting to cut in front of others for a faster wait time or line.

They felt self entitled. Better than everyone else, like they don’t have to wait in line. And when they were called on it, all hell broke loose.

There is a huge widely known and publicized problem with this younger generation feeling self entitled. I believe that was what this situation was.

Daily Horoscope for December 16

Cancer

Today's New Moon in your sixth house reminds you not to neglect your health or general well-being. It's the ideal time to arrange a check-up with your doctor or dentist, or to follow up a medical query. Cancerians love yummy food, and the festive season is hardly the best time to start a diet, but you still might want to monitor your calorie intake.
