Not really surprised being that this is in GA, but this is why we need federal comprehensive protections for GLBT men, women, and youth. The fault should be placed on the student(s) who harassed this boy, not on him for dressing how he chooses.

It's the overdone halloween hat with the plastic hair that causes the commotion. Other than that, she looks like the rest of the girls.

All highschool students should be made to wear school uniforms, that way they can all go lock step with one another like they always want to.

Courageous young adult and has a very tasteful fashion sense. Much better dressed than some of the young adults I see walking to and from school these days!

The problem with dress codes for students is that someone will object no matter what they are:

Uniforms: Will be objected to as stifling kids, especially if the dress code regulates hairstyles.

No dress code: People complain that gang colours are worn.

Rules on head coverings: Offend Muslim females who wish (or perhaps are forced) to wear a hajab. Offend Jewish males who wish to wear a yarmulka.

Semi-defined dress code without uniforms: Vague, can be misinterpeted and mis-applied.

The best rule would be for both school boards, teachers and parents to be able to think and use judgement. Dress is not a one-size fits all part of society (literally or figuratively).

I saw this story on the local Atlanta news. This student was NOT kicked out, he QUIT! I am all for self expresion, But if his attire was a distraction in class, the rules are the rules for him and ALL students. This is not about his sexual choices it is about a dress code that he chose not to follow. If my child wore his pants around his butt they, CCSD, would inforce the dress code! Cobb County School dress code reads as follows -
All students of the Cobb County School District (District) are encouraged to observe a standard of grooming and dress consistent with the level of formality of the school situation.
A. All students shall be required to maintain the level of personal hygiene necessary to

ensure a healthful school environment and to refrain from any mode of dress which

proves to contribute to any disruption of school functions.

B. Administrators and teachers shall enforce the dress code Rule, and the principal or

designee shall be the final judge as to the appropriateness, neatness and cleanliness of

the wearing apparel, or whether or not apparel is disruptive, unsafe, or in violation of

the dress code.

C. All students shall maintain the following minimum standard of dress:

1. Appropriate shoes shall be worn.
2. Midriffs shall be covered.
3. Appropriate under-garments shall be worn and may not be visible.
4. Strapless garments shall be worn with a jacket.
5. Tank-tops shall be worn with a jacket.
6. Appropriate shorts, as determined by the school administration, may be worn.
7. No caps, hats, bandanas nor hoods covering the head are to be worn in the school

buildings during the school day unless there is a special activity during which they are

deemed appropriate by the school administration.
8. Clothing or ornamentation that does any of the following is prohibited:

a. Displays or advertises substances illegal for minors.

b. Displays suggestive phrases, designs, markings, or profanities.
c. Advocates, promotes, or suggests illegal activity.

D. Local schools may establish additional requirements for student dress,

including school uniforms. These additional requirements must be approved by the

Area Assistant Superintendent and reviewed by Policy and Planning. School

uniform proposals must also be reviewed by the Board attorney.

E. Parents or students who have specific questions about a garment's appropriateness

should consult the local school student handbook and/or the local school administration.

Adopted: 9/8/82
Reclassified an Administrative Rule: 9/1/04
Revised: 4/13/83; 8/8/84; 7/23/87; 6/14/89; 11/11/92; 5/23/02; 11/10/04;

I believe that this will cost the school district hundreds of thousands of dollars in court costs and in the end the distict will lose.

I know I will give top the ACLU to ensure this kids right to wear what he wants.

I also belioeve that if the school wants to impose a dress code they should institute a uniform that all students can wear.

I have always thought uniforms were a great idea. It puts all the kids on a level playing field as far as their dress, taking "fashion" out of the equation.

I can easily imagine that this would be very disruptive on his part.

I take it your uniforms would be non-gender specific?

It's his civil right and by making different dress codes for men and women if challenged in the U.S. Supreme Court would likely be found unconstitutional and gender discriminatory. How is it disruptive? I could understand it being disruptive if he was showing his chest, privates, and buttocks but this is not the case.

I believe in school uniform and that they should be UNISEX uniforms. That would solve the problem. One color, not pink or blue. Purple is good and unisex.

I certainly seriously doubt the harasser was punished. It was Georgia after all.
