Women Flock to Self-Defense Classes

Hundreds of Metro Atlanta area woman have attended a series of free self-defense classes held in the wake of Meredith Emerson's murder.

I agree with Gaston. I think self defense classes give woman false security. I am 6' 3" 225. A knee to my abs wont hurt me. As soon as you try to go for my eyes I'll grab and break your arm. What these women don't understand is that a lot of guys are going around just looking for a reason to punch certain women in the face. One of these little self-defense moves will just give these guys the reason they're looking for. And then the guy gets out of trouble because it was self-defense.

I think if you read the entire article, it said that the main focus of the class was on awareness and avoiding physical confrontation. I think everyone could benefit from tips to keep out of dangerous situations. I see women in parking lots, etc. everyday, alone, staring at the ground, oblivious to what's going on around them. Those are the type of women perverts are looking for.

The most important thing is to not let yourself be put in a dangerous situation. Unfortunately, for women, EVERYONE poses a risk. Even carrying a gun isn't going to help if you're not paying attention and a man sneaks up behind you and hits you over the head. And unless you are carrying the gun in your hand, chances are you won't be able to get to it in time even if you DO have a couple of seconds warning.

These sick individuals bide their time and wait for the chance to hit someone from behind, or get women when they aren't paying attention. As a woman, we've got to be aware 100% of the time as to who is in front, behind, and on the sides of us.

I walk with a partner ever morning, AND my dog, who barks and growls at everyone. If we see someone, and they talk to us or approach us, we don't say anything, we ignore them. Now probably 99% of the time, the person is no threat, and is probably also offended - but that's just too bad. These days you just can't be friendly to strangers, and I don't intend to be a victim of that 1%.

Damn straight! I don't give a damn if the WORLD is pissed with me. I'd rather be alive and have a stranger annoyed with me rather than be dead.

Also, if people are going to carry guns for protection (as per some of the posts above), they need to know when, and how, to use them. Don't go shooting everything thing in sight, but don't wait for them to get you first! Classes would definitely be wise.

Or he could get his wish if i stop and make things easier for him (or her). I'm not saying everyone should fear for their lives every time they leave the house, that would be ridiculuous. Nor am i saying that one should absolutely ignore every stranger they come in contact with. I'll never feel bad about trying to minimize the chances of harm coming to me thoiugh.

Walking around with rose colored glasses on doesn't change the fact that, unfortunatley, evil is out there. Some people feel that learning martial arts will help, other feel that carrying a weapon will. I happen to think a little common sense will help us all. Men need to be cautious too, by the way.

Upon graduation from the "Rambo's on the rag" class, will they be given a bag for their family to put their head in so they may further emulate some stupid hiker who propositioned a sixty year old toothless bum for extra shopping money? Investigations seem to be turning up a much different side to her personal life than the one being sold to the public via the media. I think these classes are good as long as they don't embolden women to go where the shouldn't with a false sense of toughness. I am 6 ft 230 musclar and can bench 300lbs at almost fifty. Have had 3yrs of martial arts training and been in numerous fights as a youth and some as an adult. Grew up fighting gang members. But i really would think twice or three times about a trip in the woods alone especially unarmed. Self defense starts with making the right choices.

I know we are supposed to be free. But are you free to wear a bikini on metropolitan at 4 30 at night alone. You should be but you know if you do you will attract some pretty negative attention and probably get raped or worse. Why are woman venturing out on trails alone in the woods. My ex girlfriend used to do this. I would ask her in astonishment what did she think she was doing. She said if there was a poblem she would run or scream. My answer was how fast and who would hear you. Come on please lets' use some common sense.

You know, it's sad and scary to know that there are people like you out there. Only a complete and utter idiot would make those kind of remarks about someone who had just been brutally murdered.
